upgrading to i7 990X

Thread Starter
I have just got my hands on an i7 - 990X. I'm fairly sure that I can just drop it into my system in place of my Xeon, but thought I would double check on here, I don't want to damage it....or anything else for that matter.

I currently run an X58 board, a Giga-Byte X58A-UD3R (rev 1.0), with a skt 1366 Xeon E5530 and 6GB DDR 2000MHz (3 x 2gb g.skill).

As far as I can see this CPU should work fine in this board... however, if anyone knows different please can you advise? Also, is my RAM OK?

The rest of my PC specs are in signature... I have also just bought one of the new Antec Kuhler H2O 620 all-in-one CPU liquid coolers to replace my Cool-IT ECO, as the Antec is supposed to be a lot better and quieter.... I was hoping to get it to 5GHz.

Also.....and sorry for all of the random questions... but does anyone know by how much the power consumption for this chip will be at 5GHz? i.e. does running it at 5ghz, vs 3.46ghz use 50% more power, or 100% or 200% more power.... i think you get the idea. Im just trying to figure out if its worth runnng it at that speed.

thanks, if anyone wants to know anything about this chip I have one in my hands and it will be in my system soon, providing above is all OK.

it will work and if you need all that power and you can cool it then go for 5 ghz it will use a lot of power.. not sure how much... but thats 12 threads of pure face rolls

It should work fine.

Also, for the future, fill out your sig rig under user control panel.

Indeed, the chip may well need you to update your BIOS before it works. I had to update my BIOS when I got my 980.
