THIS IS NOT A WHICH IS BETTER THREAD

it is as simple as this, a thread that is simply comparing operating systems, not people's personal views just the operating systems, the good Ole' windows knocking mac and Linux knocking windows and for those who know it Unix knocking everyone

truthfully simply stuff like this:

Junr_m_18_.jpg

just fun stuff, just remember os vs os not opinions

Keep it clean, and please dont knock other OCN'ers, this is just for pure fun.

exactly, that is my point in this, a place for fanboys to attack other os's and still have fun about it.

Windows electronic shaver supports all voltages available in the world... But you have to restart it to do anything or make any changes.

Linux is the least costly, most effective & efficient, & totally open source shaving system but requires a few minutes of learning and some technique.

Mac... Ooooo white and shiny.

I own and use all three...

What if I hate all 3 equally, then what?

To me the ultimate operating system would be the versatility of Linux, mixed with the dead-sexiness of Mac and the compatibility of windows.

Alas, we will never live in such a world.

But, I feel mac is more of a "working environment" (media development, word processing, plain ol' web surfing) while windows is a more "all around environment" (gaming, plus the others mentioned above.) And linux is kind of the ugly duckling of the crowd, while having almost the same features as the other two, plus or minus a few features.

And yet you choose Windows as the system to use.

Really, for me, it boils down to software and cost. The majority of the software I use is written for Windows. Even when something is written for Mac it then costs so much more As for Linux, not user friendly, some drivers are a pain, and again, software that I use isn't there.

the link to the first one was broken so i found a spanish version... i think it adds to the comical value

and this one made me chuckle

but the pic in the first post is absolutely epic
linux, takes more skill but does a better job, windows, easier and takes little skill to do what you want, and mac, ***

I like Linux the best and I think everything would be better if it became the norm and everyone used it. It's easier to customize, easier to fix screw ups, easier to maintain and keep clean and efficient. I use it on all my PC's except by main rig.
I use to dual boot but got sick of needing to reboot all the time. Windows and endless source of irritation but it's kind of necessary for gaming etc.

Linux is caught in a kind of catch 22 with compatibility. More hardware and software companies won't make compatible releases because not enough people use it but more people won't use it because many things are still not compatible or easily compatible. It is very close though and with the proper hardware choices the average person who just needs browser, email and word processors could use Linux exclusively.

this thread should be closed.

and to the OP, UNIX hasn't existed since the early 90's, its more of a "standard" now days, than a OS.

the closest OS out there now days that could be a "UNIX", are some that IBM produces, and the BSD's that share their roots with the UNIX system V source code. Mac OSX is more unix than linux is, but they are all posix compatible or certified.

#17 ·
Linux and OSX are both Unix-like OSes so you can take Unix out. But really it comes down to person preference and what you are trying to do. Want to do a lot of video and audio editiing, mac is the way to go. Want to do CAD and such and game, Windows. Want a server that just wont go down even if you punched it in the nuts? Go with linux.

Actually, the linux userbase has increased lately and and is increasing every day. Give it a 2-3 more years and you should start seeing games for it. Valve is supposedly developing is developing steam for linux, so that will be nice

saying unix hasnt existed for over a decade seems a bit rash :/

arent more old school operating systems like solaris still unix??

and bsd, unix, and linux, ARE different operating systems... throwing them into one group always bugs me
frown.gif

bsd is designed, linux is grown, unix is old

also worth mentioning... osx is based on bsd, not unix, not linux...

ANYWAY, it really doesnt matter which os you are a fanboy of, you gotta love funny pictures

solaris like bsd is a "clone" of the system v i believe source code for unix, so it is based in its roots as a unix, but can't be called "unix" as it is not.

look it up if you don't believe me, unix is a standard, not a OS any longer, Novell use to own the trademark and source code, i think they handed all that over to the OSS foundation tho a few years back.

macosx uses the mach microkernel and some of the bsd userland tools, saying it is based on BSD is erroneous . mac osx is posix certified, so it can run anything that was built for a posix system (recompiled of course.) it is also worth mentioning, the *bsd's do not use the mach kernel. *bsd's kernels are monolithic like the linux kernel, mach is a microkernel and the kernel mac osx uses is a hybrid kernel.

the main difference between linux and bsd, other than they use different kernels, is the fact where linux is a kernel developed independent of its userspace, bsd kernel and userspace are all developed together, creates a more stable package, and a majority of *bsd stuff is released under the bsd license, where most of the linux stuff is released under gpl, bsd license is more permissive than gpl.

basic difference with gpl and bsd is this: in gpl if you modify source code to another project, then the source code to your project has to be given back to the community, where in bsd, your modification do not have to be given back. it is prolly why apple decided to go with bsd components over gpl components for mac osx.

it is annoying to consider the *bsd's as linux and linux as unix.

*bsd is a complete operating system, where linux is a kernel, and unix is a standard

That's my point, they are all equally hard to use or easy to use depending on how much effort you are willing to use to understand them.
