[TPU] Industry’s ''Best CPU'' Speeds Up, Stays Cool, Outperforms Competition: AMD - Page 4

That's one thing I'm proud about AMD at the moment, how much their TDP's are improving over the competition (except in the graphics market, which is on par right now, come on 28nm node!)

you speak of interlagos. that is 16 cores at +500MHz turbo.
higher turbo speeds if fewer than 16 are required for the workload.

AMD is claiming Q2 production and Q3 widespread availability for Interlagos and Valencia, 16 and 12-core parts respectively. Both will have a next generation turbo feature which should boost all cores by 500MHz simultaneously if there is power and thermal headroom.

if 16 cores/two dies in MCM have turbo of +500MHz;
what will turbo be for the desktop 8-core part?

In Turbo 2.0 all 16 cores can be used while Turbo is on. If the chips aren't at their theoretical absolute maximum because of the software loading them then they will scale up their speeds but stay within TDP. (Stay within TDP, not ADP.) So you can have a nice little 500mhz boost without sacrificing cores. Though I think in low load situations cores still turn off, don't quote me on that part.

AMD FTW.... seriously AMD has come a long way from where it was. Intel should be scared of AMD because of the type of technology they are coming out with nowdays. Plus they seem to be always a step further than Intel.

Although the 2nd Gen Intel Processors are coming along quite nicely so maybe this could come down to a dogfight.

but seriously...

Intel STep your game up!

I admit, the price/performance appeals to me (new for me). I'd like to see a cheap overclocked AMD system compared.

There is alot of variety in the server market, its not always about fastest cpu. For some I/O heavy applications something like a low powered atom cpu would be fine. The fact that you can equip a 12/24/48 core server for far less than a comparable intel system and it uses less power makes alot of sense for many applications.

Although I wouldnt want this in my desktop.

Say, will 1 of these CPUs go on any client desktop board, and if so could it be used on like just a normal desktop client Windows 7 64 Bit Edition OS?

If yes to both, which board will we need to use?

Opteron 6176 D1 2.3 GHz 12x 512 KB 2x 6 MB 3.2 GHz 11.5x 1.1875 80 W 115 W Socket G34 February 14, 2011

BTW, I find this chip insanely impressive, I wonder if this is any indication of what future Architect will be Desktop Side...

Just curious...

A press release from AMD claiming they have bested a chip released roughly a year ago. Cool? Not that I don't believe everything I read, but generally claims coming from both intel and amd rarely translate into reality.
Would've been cool if AMD released the 8 core chips on the desktop... I mean, 80w acp for 2.6ghz means this chip can probably do 3ghz+ at 115w, and would've possibly even made a decent 970 competitor. Of course, with the argument that we had with JF at xs over bulldozer being limited to 8 cores means amd is too stubborn to bring these high core count chips to the desktop.
