AMD/ATI/ASUS Build Noobie Here!

Thread Starter
I wanted a new build and i wanted bang for my buck, Microcenter & a Triple A build ended up being my route of choice.
$650 got me...:
AMD Phenom II x4 970 .... 3.5Ghz
HIS 6850 1gb GDDR5 256bit
8gb OCZ DDR3-1333Mhz
ASUS M4A88TD-V USB3
Zalman 850w Modular PSU
LG Optical drive

So far I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase!

Now.. my mobo has a "Turbo Key II" and from what I read, there is no reason to have it turned off. In everest I noticed all four of my cores are now at 3780Mhz, or 3.78Ghz.... and then I got the bug.

I want more. But I need help. I've never OC'ed before. Could anybody explain this turbo key to me in more depth? Also, the "core unlocker" I have read 'can' do stuff for my processor, but I have also read it doesn't do anything for my processor... should I turn it on?

Also, I have a Thermaltake Blue Orb II sitting around from my old build, does anybody know of a mounting bracket I can use to use it with my processor?

(! I forgot) ... I don't want alot of extra power, maybe get the processor to a stable 4.1 ... how would I go about doing this? And if I want to do any overclocking would you reccomend I turn off the turbo key or leave it on?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Using the core unlocker with your CPU would be pointless since your CPU has no dormant cores. The only CPUs one should use it with would be a Phenom II/Athlon II X2/X3 since those are the only CPUs, that I know of anyways, that have dormant cores but I do know the Phenom II X4/X6, Athlon II X4's have no dormant cores.

Turbo Key II appears to just bump up your CPU speed by pressing a button. I would probably disable it if I were to manually overclock but I've never used it.

I didn't go with a 1055t cause I got the 970 for 125.99 otherwise I would have.

Ok, see I got conflicting things that I have been reading where people said they could be unlocked, but I will take your word for it.
I figured somebody would say to disable it, I just never saw such a feature actually on the motherboard before.
Thank you for that tutorial. It is going to come in handy.

Are there any builds on here with similar setups to me where people stabilized and such that I can view? I am new to overclock.
And, any idea on a mounting bracket for that cpu cooler I have?

Also, I have read that you can "unlock" my card to "become" a 6870? Is this true? If so, how possible?

Like KillingTheSilence said leave the core unlocker switch OFF, it will not work for your processor. I have the same board as yours and I used the Turbo V on a Sempron 140 (single core). It does the overclocking for you, it overclocked mine from 2.7 -3.6??. It was simple and easy, it does stress testing to make sure it is stable. If you just want a "little" over-clock it works great, but if you want to push the limits then you need to learn the "ins and outs" of over-clocking.

OCZ!?
DDR3-1333!?
ABANDON SHIP
All their DDR3-1333 (pretty much) is rated 9-9-9-20 generic, but at an unacceptable 1.65V - and are known to overclock EXTREMELY poorly! Return that RAM, we could recommend something better for the price!

But the worst part is you paired this with the top-end x4 (970) and a 6950 which is also very high end. This is below the bottom end. I think you bought the RAM from Microcenter as with your other thread, never buy RAM from Microcenter! They have a really crummy selection and despite taxes you'd save off Newegg!

I was wondering how long the RAM Guru would take to jump on this one, lol. That's why I didn't say anything. Don't take this the wrong way xd 1771 I agree with you.

it does the overclocking for you? can you explain this for me in more depth because I have not seen such an increase in my use? do you mind if i contact you on aim or something?

I live in NJ, my microcenter actually charges me 3.5% tax versus the 7% newegg would charge me plus shipping. I paired it with a 6850 not 69, but ill take that as a typo? I bought my entire build at microcenter due to insane deals. You have ram suggestions? Please?

I love that every post I see from you says something like that

Back on topic, I haven't got a clue of any mounting brackets you could use with that cooler. I'm not sure how good it would do anyways though since it doesn't even appear to use heatpipes.

As for RAM, OCZ used to be pretty good but nowadays not so much. If I remember right, they even stopped producing RAM just a little while ago and are now focusing solely on SSDs. The reliable brands would be Corsair, G.Skill, and Mushkin. Maybe Crucial and Kingston as well. For speeds, you would want to look for something like 1600MHz CL7 @1.5v or maybe even some G.Skill "Eco" series since they run at 1.35v giving them more room for overclocking.

Here is what you do-open up Turbo EVO (it's on your motherboard install disk).
Click on Auto Tuning, then on More settings, then Extreme Tuning, then go down to the lower right a click START. Just follow the prompts and agree to whatever they ask (can't remember exactly, what they ask) This is SOFTWARE over-clocking. Most true over-clockers shy away from using this, But if you just want a little bump then give it a shot. It will NOT mess up your computer. It will go through a series of configures and tests (just like you would if you were doing it manually in your BIOS). It will find what is stable and reset your BIOS to those settings. Just read what it says after you click start, it will explain what is going to happen. It is simple....Now if you want to go to 4.0GHz then your going to have to do some reading, because I don't think this program will go THAT far (not sure).
