A better CPU cooler than H50 without blocking high profile RAMs

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I've been poking around for awhile but only now I made the account.
Here's my rig:

i7-930 @ 4.0 Ghz (1.32v)
H-50 cooler
P6X58D-E
2GBx6 G.skill Pi series 1600Mhz 7-8-7-24
HAF 922 case
..and other stuff that doesn't matter for now

Here's my problem: H50 @ 82C+ with spike up to 90C.

Here's what I've tried:
  • Adding CM Sickleflow 69cfm fan for push-pull out of the case.
  • Turn them both inside and tried intake instead of exhaust
  • Reseated heatsink with Arctic 5 paste (tried it many times with many methods without lifting heatsink once dropped in)
  • and still I'm getting 45-50C idle & 82C full (room @ 77F/23C)

So well...I don't like this cooler anymore. maybe mine's defective because sometimes I can hear water flowing.
I want to get a new heatsink, NOT H70. (sick of corsair all-in-one for now)
but all the good ones (Noctua D14, CM V6GT, etc) are all too big and will block my RAMs.
They are pretty damn tall with a fan on it (I'll probably remove the fan but it's still too tall for most heatsinks)

Does anyone have experience or know for sure a top-of-the-line cooler that won't block tall RAMs? (custom liquid cooling is out of my budget)

Thanks so much for the help in advance!

Why can't you remove the heatsink on your RAM?

Tried lapping your H50? The base is pretty concave and doesnt really form that good a seal with a 1366 sized proc.

I have a Coolit Freezone Elite, it cools better then the h50/h70 but good luck finding one brand new and if you do find one brand new it's gonna be about 300$. I was lucky enough to get mine from a member here on OCN for 100$.

But basically it's a all in one cooling unit with 2 TEC's on the radiator to further the cooling of the liquid. And if you don't have the software installed it will condensate and go below ambient temp if left @ 100% even with my overclock (1.65v @ 3.9ghz) on idle at least with load temps of ~70c.

I'm thinking Venomous X, Megahalems, and if enough clearance Archon (won't intrude ram slots, but it's tall so gotta make sure your case is wide enough for it, I think it might fit on a 922 though).

NH-D14.

The front fan can be scooted up to clear tall RAM and should cool much better than the H50 under load.

In a 60*F room my 4GHz i7 idles at 28*C and loads at 65*C in Prime and OCCT.

Also that seems to be a high vcore for 4GHz.

Note that the body of the NH-D14 may block the first 2 RAM slots:

Yikes, that's toasty!!! doesn't sound like the fault of the cooler IMHO something else is awry. I have never seem temps while benching over 4.0GHz greater than 73c on my H50 O'clocking a C0 i7 920.
