Sorry it's just I've been studying about Global Economic Systems for hours on end for the entire week and I can't stop talking about it when the topic (or something relating to it) comes up. I'm quite nervous about that exam since although the prof is fair, you have to work your ass off to get a 2-2, and to get a first you have to fully and completely synthesize and critically analyze and discuss various facets of some topic from different points of views.

It depends on what you call "fail". i think its gonna be slower clock for clock, but overall a good CPU.

G34 is rectangular because there are 2 dies on the substrate.

There is no such thing as a free market. If there was I could buy beer before noon on a sunday in texas.

What you will quickly learn about economics is that it is flawed because there is no such thing as a free market. How many of your exercises began with "our first assumption is that we hold the money supply constant." That is like saying "let's figure out the weather for next week, but to do that, let's hold the temperature constant."

Economics is a discipline that teaches you how to think, how to reason and how to deduce an answer. It will not teach you the answer.

Intel's chips are made in Costa Rica or the Philippines.

We are a global company with locations around the world. We employ people around the world. We sell products around the world.
Global companies do employ people from various nations, but that isn't a good enough reason to simply abandon manufacturing in the US - a country where sales are made at a greater scale than any other.
Let's say a company sells 40% of its products in a nation, reasonably, it should be expected that a comparable proportion of its revenue is returned back to the people of that nation by employing them. Because otherwise, the company is affecting the economy of the said nation negatively.

While the US has the workforce, the infrastructure and the raw materials ready for the construction of chips, AMD has moved most of its construction sites to Germany - a country in which all the costs mentioned are comparable to the US.

In contrast, Intel is making an effort to bring manufacturing back to the US by building a new manufacturing company in Arizona. And I respect that deeply.

EDIT: It's good that AMD is doing the same albeit at a smaller scale.

Global Foundries Fab 1 is located in Germany.... However TSMC (IIRC they supply some of AMD's silicon but most comes from Global Foundries) is located in Taiwan.

@ born2bwild: It's all about supply networks and as a TNC they can locate pretty much anywhere they want. If it were really better for AMD to locate in the US they probably would. You can't be so "ethnocentric" (is that the right use of the word?). Sure I don't like it (I have no doubt in the back of my mind there is probably someone in India that can do the same thing that I'll end up doing), but that's the way the cookie crumbles. (I also don't like gentrification either but that's moreso because that means I have to pay higher rent or be displaced).

Again, you can't have things both ways. Do you like capitalism (boo those damn commies in the White House right?) Well you can't say one thing, turn around and have selective protectionism but only for you. It's just like championing freedom but at the same time quelling dissent. China has no qualms about it "this is what the state says, if you don't like it then too bad" but on the other hand the US says one thing "we're fighting for freedom, freedom is good, democracy rules" but then at the same time quelling dissent (NB: This is a super generalized and oversimplified example/explanation, may not be totally right but it kind of works).

Now assuming AMD has all the info they require to select a location they've likely picked the optimal location for amenities, a skilled labour pool, cheap labour, and minimized transport costs/supply systems (ie. JIT systems to reduce overhead). Don't forget about "embeddedness". There's probably not going to be another Silicon valley or Route 128 because the institutions and infrastructure is embedded into the local area they're probably not going to move after all the investment they've put into retrofitting buildings and such and other related industries are already agglomerated there anyways so why move away when your locale is ripe with "tacit knowledge".

Just my thoughts....

Quite frankly, I can't say any AMD chip has "failed" in any way. The Phenom II is a relatively ancient architecture that is still performing brilliantly in modern applications. However, there is no arguing that the architecture is absolutely at the end of it's rope. With this in mind, I think someone would be insane to think that AMD's new chips are going to "fail."

AMD is not building any fabs, we use globalfoundries and they are building a fab in new york.

Would you rather have 4 cores with HT or 8 real cores?
