4.2 ghz stability issue

I pushed the chip a little further this morning. Went in, changed the multiplier to 21x (highest) and raised the vcore a bit. Tested with intel burn test for about 5 runs and it failed. I raised the vcore to about 1.424v which is I think is plent for this overclock, and after about 15 runs through IBT it failed on the last one. The QPI is set to auto and shows to be 3604.6mhz in cpu-z. Temps are ok and not an issue. Do I really need more vcore for a 4.2? C1E, Turbo, Speedstep all of those are disabled. Have a hit a brick wall?

Hi,

1.42v kinda high for that clock.
I didn't run that when running 4.4.

Try coming off auto on QPI and go manual.
Check voltage and try raising it.
Look at a template for that oc with similar setup.

Just spotted running i5.
Try QPI anyway.

Some chips need a bit more voltage than others for same clocks, and some need a lot more. Each CPU is unique even within the same batch.

Well, now the question becomes, how comfortable am I supposed to be with pushing this chip above that vcore? Anyone recommend it?

Hi there,

I have the same i5, and tried to go 4.2ghz
Couldn't get it fully stable at 1.41v vcore.
I stopped it there cause didn't want to go higher than that on the vcore.
QPI (IMC in my case) was at 1.34
Temps were on the edge.

So you're not the only one having trouble pushing it to 4.2ghz

Tried to oc the ram a bit instead, and succeeded.

I'm now at 4.0ghz, my XMS3 (1333) ram modules run at 1520mhz, 9 9 9 24.

vcore 1.32
IMC 1.29
vDIMM 1.64

Allthough I didn't get 4.2, I'm satisfied with this, and made peace with my voltage hungry chip.

Vcore requirements increase exponentially for linear increases in clock speed. That being said, it is possible for you to not be able to hit 4.2ghz are reasonable volts. It is also possible you have some other voltage tweaking to do. NB volts? CPU term? Ram instability? When clocking this high, more components need to be taken into consideration.

I get no BSODs whatsoever just failed runs. I have been running prime95 blend for about half hour now and still no trouble. As far as ram, its running at 1280mhz I believe so way below the norm and the timings are at 8-8-8-24 from the default 9-9-9-24. Ram voltage is at 1.65v. If I dont pass a 8-10 hour prime95 blend with my settings right now I am putting it back at 4.

As far as setting the QPI to manual. What should I be aiming at?

Edit: prime95 blend failed after about 40 mins into it.

you actually tightened the timings a bit on the memory, you might want to loosen them up a bit.
