Is this a video card problem?

Thread Starter
From time to time, my display blacks out and temporarily pauses. Then, when its back to normal, I get a message saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered."

I have the latest ATI drivers though I don't recall getting this problem as often (if ever) before updating them.

My video card is an HIS Radeon HD 5850.

Could it be that my video card is dying? I've only had it for a bit more than a year.

The problem usually occurs when I open up multiple processes at once, in which case, the problem would close some of them.

Have you tried running driver sweeper, removing the old AMD/ATI drivers and then reinstalling the newest driver? I had the same problem with my Nvidias and running DS and reinstalling the latest driver fixed it.

As others said, do a clean driver install. Also an unstable overclock can also cause these problems.
