Will Q6600 bottleneck gtx560?

Do you think with my current specs, that if I bought just a Asus GTX 560 Ti OC, it will be bottlenecked by my cpu, ram, etc? Just wanna know your thoughts. Thanks. wink.gif

Yes, try to overclock your q6600 to at least 3.4-3.6 to eliminate any bottlenecking.

A wee bit, if you OC to around 3.2Ghz+ you should see any noticeable bottlenecks disappear. But if you are going to consider this then you should buy a CPU cooler.

It really depends on the game.

Stock Q6600 is 2.4ghz per core with a 1066FSB.

So, if the titles you want to play are coded well to use multiple cores then the stock speed will not bottle neck a GTX 560 or 570 for that matter.

BUT, if it is a game that use only one core or max of only two cores then it would be better to at least OC to 3ghz.

I had the oportunity to test out a GTX 560 1GB card and my Q6600 is at 3ghz, but I have 4gb of 1066 memory. And I saw a MONSTEROUS increase in performance over my water cooled and HIGHLY oc'd 8800 GT.

And of course this is in reference to using the resolution of 1920x1080. You didn't state what resolution you are running, that is also a HUGE variable.

Bottom line is that if you upgrade your video card and then you do NOT see an increase in performance from either fraps in games you had installed and know what your old card did or in numerical scores given from benchmarking applications, you are cpu bottle necked. And either replacing or overclocking your CPU will show an increase in you FPS for each given title. But, if you see a HUGE increase in game FPS and in benchmarking scores then you are not cpu bottle necked.

As long as you are 1920x1080/1200 or lower I wouldn't worry about it. And a 3ghz oc on a Q6600 is easy to do, but they are 65nm chips so pay attention to your cooling method.

Thanks for the replies. I am running 1920x1080. I just feel like If I have to spend money on cooling for OC'ing then I might as well upgrade my CPU as well. How would an i5 760 go with the 560?

A friend of mine just went up to a GTX570, also with a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz. His cpu was working close to 100% all the time while playing Bad Company 2, 1920*1080 @ Mid graphics, No AA.

GPU was at steady 60-70% load.

As ppl have said, it all depends on the game, some games are realy heavy on the cpu, others load the GPU more.

Even a i7 980x can bottleneck the right game, it all depends on how the game was coded but to answer ur question the bottleneck won't be major and u shouldn't worry about. If u find the frames aren't what u wanted then invest into a cooler and Overclock it

this is true. my old Q6600 at 3.0GHz held back quite a bit in BC2 and Black Ops.

OP what games are you playing
At stock speed that Q6600 will be a bottle neck,
I had a Q9550 and it bottle necked my GTX 285 at stock speeds but at 3.6ghz. my frames in Crysis went way up.
It's not the 4 cores that cause the limiting but the CPU speed and FSB speed

If you upgrade your CPU to the a socket 1155 then you will be buying a new motherboard and DDR3 ram as well
