Why is my core speed so low? i7

Thread Starter
I have an i7 740QM

My core speed is 930MHz all the time. I'm essentially capped at that point all the time which doesn't make any sense to me. When I just turn on my laptop it is at 930MHz. When I'm playing games like Team Fortress 2, I'm also at 930MHz. In addition to that my processor is equipped with the intel turbo boost. Is it possible that I disabled some of my cores? How do I fix this?

Run prime 95 with coretemp open to monitor temps and speed. Post a screen shot after 10-15 minutes

Edit: also make sure it is plugged in

What is your power setting at? If it is set to power saving that is why.

Right click on desktop, personalize, click on screen saver, change power settings, high performance!
(your battery won't last long though)

You can also setup so that you will have full power when plugged in and power saving when you are on battery.

That would probably be balanced.

I usually just leave mine set on balanced. I do that with my current mobile i5, and I did that when I had a Dell Precision with a mobile i7 quad.

Saves battery when browsing the web and gives me more speed when I need it.

I don't recall the specifics, but I recall some type of problem with the i7 mobile processors throttling to 900Mhz when on battery power due to speed step. If you plug the laptop in, does the speed increase to 1.73Ghz?

Can you turn speed step off in the BIOS, (although this will shorten your run time on batteries)

I'm currently running on high performance. (Power4Gear)

See if it does it while plugged in.
Also check the power options that windows has. (I find that when I resume from sleep, my CPU is taken back down to stock)
