Vintage? Well, some 200 hours of Baldur's Gate 2 and ~1000 pages of sheer dialogue of P:T are hardly vintage. In fact, no RPG surpassed these two in terms of scope and complexity to this day, they really are the cream-of-the-crop of the cRPG genre. Besides, graphics-wise, IE games aged pretty damn well - hand-painted backgrounds are as nice today as they were several years ago.

They were nice, but 3/4 top-down 2D isn't as captivating as it was 10 years ago. Not next to immersive 3D. And I say that as someone for whom those games were an early, positive influence.

+1 for the Witcher. I'm playing it now, and it's very interesting. A bit slow at first but lots of fun as it progresses. Oh and you can collect cards of the girls you get to bang LOL.

He's got the swords, he's got the women: Geralt of Rivia

Also check out neverwinter nights 2. No other Rpgs in recent history have as fleshed out of a world as this. Your allies and enemies are fleshed out extremely well and are more than your standard stereotypes. The plot is impossible to guess and keeps you guessingin without pulling any twists. Its more of i should have seen that coming but i didnt. Then the expansion mask of the betrayer kicks the series to new heights continuing the story of the original campaign.
+1 The graphics aren't bad given its age.

Immersive 3D? Well... Dragon Age looked dated, ME looked horribly dated, Oblivion had Chernobyl victims for characters, and speaking of Oblivion, F3 was very dated, etc., etc. Honestly, 3D isn't as good as it sounds. Besides, even uber-realistic graphics are worthless when the gameplay is mediocre, at least in my book, and no RPG provided the same level of story, interaction, battle, dialogue, complexity as Planescape and BG2. There just isn't a modern 3d equivalent, even DAO, hailed as the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, is not half the game it was. You get the polygons, but you don't get the gameplay. They should print that on the front cover of 95% of modern games.

Don't mind that guy he posted the same gibberish he's spouting here, that he did in a ME2 thread. He's a KOTOR and BG fanboy (granted they are good games) who goes around trolling for a response when you state the obvious. "Those games are good, but ancient." He then proceeds to bash any other game in ridiculous fashion.

EDIT: @Genzel about neilsbor

im telling you. neverwinter nights 2.

Its pretty much the only rpg that can rightfully take on baldurs gate. It doesnt win, but its the closest a game can get.

The world, the characters, the plot. All carefully crafted, something that you dont see anymore.

Dragon age while a fun game, really didnt raise the bar in any catagory. The characters are all pretty stale, you know who they are the second you meet them, oh your going to be the witty one, oh you are going to be the bbiittcchh. oh look the warrior with a sense of honor. The plot was meh at best.

Do yourself a favor and play neverwinter nights 2, it features of 2 of the best written characters ever. The plot is guaranteed to keep you interested and keep you guessing the entire time. Your companions are varied, and arent throwaway like DAO characters, they arent a stereotype, and they have depth.

It doesnt get much better with combat, 3.5 DnD. So the combat depth is there, along with the amazing character building you can do.

$20 on steam gets you the game and its 2 expansions. Worth every penny. Anyone who wouldnt suggest Nwn 2 doesnt know their Rpgs. The sheer amount of mods adding more things to the game, feats, spells, better textures, it has it all.

Not that other games suggested here arent good, they all are, but since you liked DAO, i think you are looking for another party based rpg that allows for pausing combat and tactical thinking, and you like baldurs gate so thats another reason to get it.

ME? Surprisingly, Unreal Tournament 3. They use the same engine, so the comparison should be fair, right? DAO looks marginally better than ME, the graphics are on a ~2005-2006 level. Fallout 3 was slightly better than Oblivion (2006). But of course, I anticipate comments such as "name a good rpg with a better graphics!" and because there really aren't many good rpgs, let alone good rpgs with cutting-edge graphics, mediocre graphics magically turn to stunning.

Because we all know it's the age what makes the game good. I'm telling you again, gameplay-wise, everything else is ancient, BG2 and P:T to this day have the cutting-edge cRPG gameplay.

Quote:
who goes around trolling
Seems to me like you're trolling. I'm trying to suggest good games that people like you would immediately and unjustly dismiss due to their age. Did you even play Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment? Tell me then, who's Ravel and who has a hamster?

He's a KOTOR and BG fanboy
Yeah. 'Cause I've compared ME to KotOR. In favor of KotOR. And now I'm a fanboy. Sir, you should write a book on logic, it's gonna be a bestseller.
