Graphics Card fix by Baking

Thread Starter

So... I just fixed my card. 385 for 10 minutes.

Flawless Victory!

First of all, I'm retarded. I messed a lot up. Anyway.

If you're too lazy to watch the video, Inf3rnus and I just baked my 8800GT that was refurbished from the start. It started to have some massive artifacting. I'm getting a 460 anyway, so I decided to just say F it, and I baked the card. It's working perfectly now, and with minimal work required.

Here's how it is originally.

Did you preheat the oven to 385 and then bake the card or just do it all at once?

I did preheat. I made sure it was at 385, and then I put the card in.

I'm not familiar with what you guys are doing here, but it seems you're reflowing.

A safer method could be accomplished with a heat gun and some tin foil to protect the rest of the card.

Due to prolonged stress and excessive heat on the GPU and its components results in the formation of micro-fissures/fractures in the solder. Baking it melts the solder and corrects it. But excessive heat fractures the solder again. Therefore keeping the temps as low as possible will lead to a longer life of the card till the next bake. But baking never fixes the card permanently.

But you can still manage to fix the card like I did. All you need to do find out is where the fracture is which in my case happened by accident while voltmodding.
Hope this helps.

Yep! I don't need to fix it forever, I'm getting a 460 within the week. I just needed it to get through the few days without too much pain. I might keep it as a dedicated physics card, but if it dies, it's served me well, and it shall have no regrets.
