Cool n' Quiet and C1E Are Disabled

Thread Starter
I've been trying to find my minimum voltage and playing around with the manual voltage control. I noticed that it was not throttling down when idle and staying at 2.8 GHz. My motherboard (the one in my signature) by default is set to Offset voltage and the CnQ and C1E fields let you enable or disable. But when you change the it to maunal voltage control, it grays out both CnQ and C1E and keeps them disabled.

Why is this happening and is this normal? I plan to OC my processor when I get a new cooler at some point, but I don't like the idea of having it at max frequency all the time.

When you are going to over clock you have to disable those 2 things or else you will be crashing all the time.

you only have to disable them to check stablity. some say you dont have to disable them, but almost everyone does.

worse case scenario, you lose your cnq. find the post here that someone made a new 'whatchamacallit' to throttle down your processor.
no idea what it is but, i read it works very well.
if i find the post, i'll post it up here.

Depends on the CPU/mobo, just like SpeedStep. Some will work, some won't. The last AMD I overclocked wouldn't enable CnQ unless I was below 18X multiple, so I had to raise FSB instead of a straight multiple OC. It's perfectly stable with CnQ enabled though even at 3.9, but I left all voltages stock.

Probably depends on the manufacturer parameters in each specific mobo.

WRONG.
I never crash at 4Ghz with CNQ and C1E enabled. 90% of the time it doesn't affect stability and works properly (i.e. 100% load when needed). Never disable this unless problems cause you to absolutely have to. It improves longetivity of your CPU, gets you low idle temps... I mean, seriously, WHY NOT!?
Sometimes it will stop working (despite enabled) past certain multipliers on black edition CPUs; that's it

I now realize that my reply has almost nothing to do with this thread whatsoever...
That reply happened at school though... not really much time to evaluate the thread lachen.gif

But now that I have evaluated it, to answer your question... it may be a BIOS limitation of sorts. Try updating it.
What I did say about NOT having to disable it is true though.

Anyone else have any idea? Updating the BIOS would be my last resort. There was a new release on 12/31/2010 that just says it fixes system instability problems, but I've already RMAed this board once before and just a little scared of messing with the BIOS right now.

And most of the time if you disable "C1E" it will not report the proper temps. As it will show "o degrees" on a app that reports temps. Try the bios update, it is fairly straight forward and simple.

The BIOS update didn't make a difference...

Can anyone else with the ASUS M4A89GTD confirm is this is normal? And can a mod put the motherboard name in the title to gather attention of other owners?
