"Bus speed/Ref clock" stuck

Ok, so I have an AMD Athlon II x3 425, on a MA770-DS3 from Gigabyte (bios F7h). I've been reading, and reading, and reading. And then I started.

I began by lowering CPU Multi, Ram divider/timers, blah blah blah. Voltages on Auto, except RAM, which specs at 2.1v, so I set it there.

Was trying to find a Ref Clock cap basically, so I knew when to change the HT link to push higher on the CPU. Never got that far.

After hitting 290 Ref Clock at x7 HT Link that was stable for 3 hours on Prime95 Blend, I moved onto 295. After booting into Win 7, loaded up CPU-Z, and the "Bus Speed" is at 200, and everything else is multiplied off it correctly. Returned to BIOS, still says 295. Nothing I've tried has budged it. Can't go up, BIOS doesn't support going lower. Loaded Defaults, still won't change. Cleared CMOS, nothing.

I read that flashing to a newer BIOS, then loading optimized defaults fixes it. I cleared CMOS again, flashed to F8f (newest BIOS, one step higher). Loaded Defaults, and.... You guessed it, still can't move it.

Everything else is adjustable and reads out properly in CPU-Z, but Ref Clock will NOT move. Someone smarter than me kindly point out the stupid mistake I'm overlooking. Yes, Cool & Quiet is disabled.

Edit: To make matters worse, this is Day 3 of quitting smoking, and Day 2 of messing with BIOS, this problem started 3 hours ago.

Congrats on quitting smoking, I'm gonna try it pretty soon myself (dreading it).

At any rate, have you tried some random Ref Clk setting like 250? But it is really odd that it wont budge after a P95 fail.

When you cleared your CMOS, did you unplug your machine and then push and hold the power button until all of the LED's on the board went out? Then pop the battery out?

If none of that helps you might want to try contacting GB tech support. They might have a "hard" BIOS reset procedure. I know for one of my old Asus boards there was a little known hard reset procedure which consisted of putting the battery in backwards for 30 seconds and then rebooting.

At any rate, good luck.

Actually, I unplugged it, put a jumper on the pins, hit power for 10 seconds, let it rest, removed jumper, plugged back in. It's worked previously, and if I remember correctly, is what is in the book. But I'll try what you said. Anything at this point.

BTW, I thought the nicotine patches were a load of BS, but I haven't had a craving yet using them. Using lolipops for the habit of the cig.

Yeah, unplug, push and hold power button, pop battery out.

As for smoking, well, I tried, the gum, the patch, even some damn pills they wanted me to take and nothing helped. Think I'm just gonna cold turkey it this time. I made it to the third day the last time, but then I became the worlds biggest ******* and my family went out and bought me a pack.

PS: I tried the patch, and wound up smoking with it on.

Bloody brilliant, it worked. Guess I wasn't clearing it "good enough"? Oddly, it cleared the settings with the jumper, but wouldn't move. Now it does. Thanks a load.

Yeah, 10 years of smoking, I've quit cold turkey 3 times, never stuck. Decided to try an aid this time. Managed to quit for a year once, and 8 months another time. Both times it was alcohol at a party that did me in. The 3 week time barely counts, got in a fight with the girlfriend, and went and bought a pack to "calm down".
