[oled-info] Dupont's printable OLEDs to be cheaper than LCDs by 40% - Page 3

The main problem with OLEDs has been in device longevity - but if we follow the same pattern that all other LEDs went through, I suspect they will end up with the long life and reliability that we expect.

I remember the first blue LEDs that we had. Lifespans of perhaps 100 hours, but sometimes less. But now, 100,000 hours or more, easily. Same with blue laser diodes. 100 hours didn't cut it for Blue Laser disks - but now that they are +10,000 hours, Blu-Ray is possible. Years ago, red laser diodes had short life spans and terrible reliability, so the first CD players were large and complex because they needed to use He-Ne laser tubes.

OLEDs will be on the market, and will push a lot of other technologies out of the market. Like for backlights in laptops, where the CCF tubes take the lions share of power - eliminated and thus, more battery life with OLEDs. But it will take time, these things are difficult to create, not because OLEDs are complex, but because they have to invent all of the processes to create these devices.

People never not start printing these things like there is no tomorrow, and instead of global warming, we won't have any more electronics. *GASP*

/lol

I pray that never happens though.

Yeah there is more surface gold than surface silver still unmined. When we strip the earth we'll just mine the moon.

This exactly, just becuase they can offer it cheaper doesn't mean they will, more likely they will not pass on the savings but rather widen their profit margin
