XFX 6950 possible upgrade helpz

Thread Starter
So when i got back from deployment in 08 i blew a few G's and built this:

Intel Q9450 (Using a V8 with a fsb of 450 @ 3.6Ghz)
Mobo XFX Nforce 790I
Vid: ATI 4850
Ram: Patriot 16g (4x4 at 9-9-9-24) (just got this yesterday)
HD: To many to list no SSD's atm

Looking at maybe a XFX 6950 or something that might be a better start. Thanks in advance for the tips.

I wondered why you double posted lol. I would certainly recommend the 6950 (maybe a biased view though). I picked up two of them, and it still seems at the moment as if every one can unlock the shaders at minimum for a better performance.

Here's a TechPowerUp link with some benchmarks and some value comparison charts.

Even without unlocked shaders though, the 6950 trades blows with a GTX570/560 with the GTX 5 series tending to edge it out at lower resolutions and the 6950 tending to beat the 560 and close the gap to the 570 at higher resolutions.

It's a solid release from ATI, and at the moment a very well priced card.

I'm returning my 6850 and getting a 6950. Sure, the thing's pretty large but it still fits in most mid-tower cases. Also, which version should I get? I'd like to unlock it to a full(or almost) fledged 6970

At the moment, any version seems to do. Here's a link to the TechPowerUp forums where a gentleman wrote about the mod and how to do it. More importantly, they've been tracking unlock success rates.

Link

Since it seems some of the non-reference cards do too, just look around. Go with whatever brand you prefer seems to be the rule of the moment.

6950 is a good card. I think some people have been having trouble unlocking the sapphire cards. XFX is a decent buy they offer double lifetime warranty, so if you sell it you can pass along the warranty. Just make sure your PSU is good enough to run one and that your case will fit one also. I have a XFX and it clocks in a 11"...
