As said, if the price is right, might as well do it. Folding/Browsing/Gaming/Coding FTW!
Yeah.... but the question is do you need it? Otherwise, you are just spending money for zero gain.

Folding/Browsing do not require that much memory.
Current games (and near future games) require 2GB.
Coding depends on what you are doing.
Once again...

It really depends. If you are just a gamer/itunes/surf the web type of guy, there's no need to go much more than 4gb.
If you have a workstation which runs multiple virtual machines, etc, then yes, more is better.

For most users, anything over 4gb is complete overkill.

I have only 2gb on the sig rig, I play f1 2010, css, music, pscs5, hd movies- nothing stops the computer, anything more than 2gb is unnecessary imho

It all depends. Games are begining to use more then 2 GB of ram usage at the higher settings. Having 4GB is still pretty good beans. The only games that I know of that use well over 2GB are STALKER mods, Crysis, probably Crysis 2, and minecraft servers. At the current cost of 12 GB if you could probably grab it anyways if you have the money. But I dunno, 4+ GB is only helpful in HEAVY engineering applications, servers, and photoshop. Which is why I'm sticking to more than 4 GB as I have use for it.

Every GB of ram adds an additional inch to your personal hard stick of ram.
