Help with OMNI GPU Hydro cooler mod

Thread Starter
Hi I was hoping for come cooling advice about a Hydro cooling system, which I guess is close enough to the subject of water cooling so I hope I posted in he right place.

I recently purchased a hydro cooler from a company called CoolIt which is called the OMNI cooler. Its a hydro cooler based solution for video card (GPU cooling) just like the Corsair series of the H50/H70 etc... for CPU hydro cooling.

So my problem is as follows, my version 2 of my video card does not support the layout of their plate, so I decided I want to try to get a regular water cooling block, and rig or mod it to work with the all in one hydro cooling system. The OMNI cooler has a fan attached to a grill, with a pump on the other side of the fan, making it a nice compact solution.

So my questions:
Here is the plate/block I plan to purchase:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12542/ex-blc-799/EK_Radeon_HD_5870_ASUS_V2_VGA_Liquid_Cooling_Block_-_Acetal_Nickel_EK-FC5870_ASUS_V2_-AcetalNickel.html
Is this good enough?

Secondly, the blocks come with no fittings/barbs. I can not tell by looking atthese plates which one I need, perhaps someone more experienced here can identify which is the correct size based on their experience.

Which tubing do I buy, I guess this goes with the earlier question of the fittings size, I think the leads on the OMNI cooler are 1/4" but I do not know how large the fittings are on the GPU block plate, or if I need convertors as well should they be different?

I noticed differet solutions and dye. The unit I have now already has a sunstance in it, I do not know what they use, should I dump whats in there now and get somehting new?
How do I know if whats in there now is enough (in terms of volume)?
Whats is the rule for filling up, is it a certain % of total capacity of what liquid can be held? I read the beginners guide but didn't understand in full what filling up to the "T" meant.

I saw another forum where someone needed longer distance and modded the Corsair H50 CPU hydro cooler with different tubing and colored liquid, so I kow it can be done, because this is basically the same thing, just for GPU.

Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.

The EK blocks are all going to be the same performancewise, the different materials are for aesthetics. Some prefer the acetal over the acrylic because there's less risk of it cracking if you accidentally over-tighten the barbs, but otherwise there's no performance difference. Both blocks are also copper, one is simply nickel-plated copper where the other is bare copper.

As for the fittings, the blocks are threaded G1/4 (essentially the watercooling standard these days) so any barbs listed as G1/4 will fit. You'll need to find the appropriately-sized barb to fit with the tubing on the CoolIT.

I think once you get the tubes cut and modded you will need to add a reservoir, but I'm not sure, the guys in the H50 mod thread could help you more. The reason for adding a res would be to allow you to completely fill the system, if you just tried to reconnect the tubes you would probably wind up with air bubbles left in the lines which would hurt performance. I'm not sure what size radiator you have on this loop, but it's it's a single 120 like the H50/70 you might not see as much cooling power as you expect when hooked up to a GPU.

@SaltWaterCooled
I believe just like the H50 the reservoir is already part of the fan grill area, so I don't think I would need another external one.

Thank you for pointing out that it is for aesthetics only in terms of difference in material, however, the more I read through these various ones, I see only 1 official block listed as ASUS 5870 V2 compatible (leave it to ASUS to completely revamp the board design with capacitors in different areas, as well as change in width spacing in the punch-down of holes in the board).
The only one listed is this one (so much for options):
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12542/ex-blc-799/EK_Radeon_HD_5870_ASUS_V2_VGA_Liquid_Cooling_Block_-_Acetal_Nickel_EK-FC5870_ASUS_V2_-AcetalNickel.html#blank

Where can I find the posters of the H50 mods? Is it in this forum somewhere? I guess I'll look around.

Here is a pic of the fan part of the unit:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviewimages/coolit-omni-alc/coolit-omni_pump.jpg
As in the H50, the reservoir appears to be part of the enclosure surrounding the fan/grill area. Keep in mind, I am not looking into doing any crazy overclocking, but just to use a cooling system thats very compact and to get better temps than with the stock fan, when it gets hot in my room now I get 70deg C temps on my GPU and it overheats a bit at times, so I am hoping any type of water/hydro cooling solution will put an end to this.

I am not sure what I will encounter once I cut the original tubes. I hope there is a fitting of some sort.

The omni gpu cooler is not compatible with aftermarket blocks. You have to purchase the gpu blocks from coolit since they have a special connection system for the individual gpu blocks. I would just put together a custom loop. All coolit stuff is garbage compared to a custom loop which you can do for the same price. Get the Rasa kit and then add that EK gpu block you want. Performance will be much much better.

^^I'd agree, custom loop will serve you better. Spend a bit more now and save yourself buying it later and eating the cost of the CoolIT.

a loop with the rasa kit will be cheaper and you will also get the cpu cooled as well. The omni is $130 which is the same price as the rasa kit then you have to buy the plate for the omni which is expensive as hell. Brings the total to within $5 of that rasa kit with a gpu block added

I meant Rasa kit when I said custom redface.gif That kit is practically the parts you'd buy for a custom loop anyway... well, sort of, maybe not for one of your loops biggrin.gif

Yeah, rasa kit to me is "custom". It dominates everything else in it's pricerange.

Hey all, thx for the suggestion to buy the Rasa kit, but I already own the CoolIt unit. It's just that its not compatible with my Video Card, because ASUS decided to make a Revision of the card's board with a completely different board layout.

As I stated before, since I already invested all this money and I can't get it back, I want to take advantage of the half-kit I have now. I am not looking for an ultimate cooling solution, nothing extreme, I am sure the Rasa kit as well as many others will kick butt over what I am trying to accomplish here with this one, but I just don't need all that.

I really need a reply from someone whom is good at modding of these things, I myself am at just about every other PC part/combo, although I admit am new to the water cooling scene, its a new challenge for me, and I don't want to screw things up.

So, based on the picture I linked to above, I am wondering what i will need to tie in the tubes with the stock unit. Of course it is easy to plug them into the block meant for the GPU, but how about the other end?

Also, how does one know how much coolant liquid (distilled water or other) to add?

Do I keep the existing liquid, or replace it altogether?

If adding distilled water, I saw some people mention adding anti fungal and such liquid, do I need to do this as well?

If I want to make the liquid a nice blue color, which dye can I add - or should I add dye at all?

Will it be ok to add dye with the anti fungal and corrosion liquid ( I read mixed reports)?

I guess these are my basic questions for now, hope they aren't too noob, wish they were covered in a FAQ and sorry if they are and I missed it.

@OP-

If you try adding the block you linked above, you will see very poor cooling performance. Just because it is 'liquid cooling', it has limitations. Every water loop has a thermal limitation of heat dissipation. In this case, the limit is very low; almost at the point the CPU alone is more than it can handle. Toss in a GPU that puts out more heat watts...recipe for disaster. Plus, it will be 'modded' so any leaks or failure will not be covered by warranty, cost you an expensive LCS and potentially the hardware it fries.

This is an excellent example why research into watercooling (or any other expensive purchase in which you have little knowledge) will benefit you when the time comes to make the decision to buy.
