Busted Asus G50vt-x1

Thread Starter
Well, like the title says my Asus G50vt-x1 is dead in the water, heh mad.gif

The 9800M GS video card is fried or something. Whenever i turn it on i get strips of colors on the screen, massive video glitches and then the dread BSOD with errors to my video .sys video file.

I tried reinstalling video driver but the nvidia .sys file always gets corrupted then i'm given the BSOD. So now i have 3 options

1) Find a replacement. This is what i want to do and why i posted this topic on the forum. I have tried, but i cannot find a flipped MXM card to place in the lappy. I would like to buy a replacement card and fan for that matter from a credible source and not one where i'll have to cross my fingers and hopes it works

2) Last resort of an option really. I can send it into Asus and have it worked on, but I'll have to be prepared to folk over around $400. The great part about that is that i will know that it's done correctly and i'll have no future problems

3) By a new lappy. That will happen in the future as Mass Effect maxes out my cpu, but that's down the road.

Long story short, i would like to salvage this baby. It's my first laptop so i'm sweet on it and want to keep it.

Can anyone help me track down a flipped MXM card to put into it? I know that a 260M GTX can go inside, but it'll be an overkill. I'm looking for a good, reasonable long term solution. I'll update this thread as i find leads.

Heck, does anyone on this forum have a working flipped MXM card i can put into my lappy?biggrin.gif

I seen 2 260M GTX's on ebay... one was a 3.0 and the other a 2.1 so your first bet would be to figure out what slot it has... What does it currently have too... also see if they used another fan/heatpipe combo for the 260's than whats on your current model... honestly I've only replaced MXM cards with the same exact model... so its hit or miss if you wanted to upgrade.

There's always the option of trying to bake the card. (assuming it's removeable)

EDIT: You can even try a bake before sending it in, as long as you don't bake it too long, there would be no signs of it had been baked.

Hm, baking isn't an option unfortunately. I'm out of thermal paste.

What will baking it do?

Well, buying a tube of thermal paste is a lot cheaper than having to pay Asus for a fix/replacement.

The theory behind baking the card is that along the card's life, it heats up and cools down so much that the solder develops micro-fractures, which is the cause of the artifacts. The baking will reflow the solder, filling in the fractures, thus fixing your card.

This method has seen many successes, but it's not guaranteed to work, I myself have only had 3 successes in about 6 tries, but when it works, it's better than buying a new one or paying someone to fix it.

Heres an example of it working. (There are many other examples in that thread.)

Just got off the phone with Asus with some heartbreak frown.gif

The SN for my model is gone, it had totally rubbed off. So they won't be able to repair it. My only options are to "bake" it or find a replacement.

I have not been able to find a replacement however, i'm stuck, heh confused.gif

I'm just going to save up my money and buy a new lappy, transfer my old hardrive. After i transfer it over, i'll just sell it to you guys on OCN. Perfect for spare parts if you have g50vt-x1 model. I'll let it go for around $200 or so, nothing else is wrong with it. My vid card is fried is all.eek.gif

If you plan to sell it here, you better get the required 35-reps first.

To be honest, baking takes about an hour (prep/bake/cool) and is as simple as placing the cleaned GPU on a baking sheet, preheating the oven to about 390*F and putting it in for about 10 mins, then opening the door, and letting it cool for about a half hour.

What do you have to lose, why not save that money and fix your laptop for free?
