How do I stop windows from controlling my wireless adapter?

Thread Starter
Basically, I have an ASUS 802.11N/G/B wireless adapter, and it has software that needs to control it on its own. However, Windows wireless is ALSO trying to control it, resulting in me not getting any internetz. I only know this is the problem because on my laptop (which has windows not controlling the adapter) it works fine.

My OS is : Windows Vista Ultimate x64
My laptop os is: Windows XP x86

On XP, it asks you as soon as you run the software the first time, if you'd like to disable the windows controller.

On Vista, it doesn't.

Now, I know how to disable windows from using WLAN, but that disables all internet.

What do?

I believe you need to disable the "Wireless Zero" windows service. This is responsible for automatically configuring the adapter.

Turning it off in networking just disables it all together.

I think this will also disable the network settings in control panel for your adapter, you will need to use the application that came with your hardware to configure, or re-enable the service.

Hmm, That's sounds like it'd do it because I was disabling something else, so hopefully this will work. will post again from the desktop if it works. Thanks a bunch for your help non the less.

Yes, for XP you will want to disable the wireless zero configuration service.

the only one there seems to be is WLAN autoconfig, no windows zero though,

is that the same thing?

also, if I disable that will I still be able to get internet from the asus utility?

EDIT:

I'm trying to do this on my vista system, not xp.

Basically instead of starting it, just stop the service--that should do it.

edit--though your experience is the opposite of mine--all of the programs that have come with my wifi adapters have seriously sucked, and the built-in windows one has worked flawlessly. Though, of course, that's not a universal thing...

Yes to both of your questions. Disabling the windows wireless configuration tool allows you to use 3rd party wireless software like the Asus one you're trying to use.

Yeah, the worse are toshiba's. 400 options to confused people and have them call their ISP.
