Really? Did you even read the whole thread?

Post me some proof. I'll pass along to you the same reply I've given everyone else: If you can show me actual evidence about memory timings and explain with proof that flashing a 6970 BIOS onto my 6950 will kill it, then I will be happy to remove this from my sig and flash my cards back to 6950's.

Otherwise your posting more rumors and promoting more scare threads. Honestly I doubt you have any. No one to date has yet to post any that I've found. Anthraxinsoup here even tried to lie his way out of it, feel free to check out the link he left in his sig about the 6950 mem timings.

Seriously cut the crap with this already. Everyone knows modifying any hardware has a risk. If you can't prove that flashing a BIOS will kill these cards then don't bother posting. Mine have been going solid for nearly 6 months now.

If it makes you feel better you can rephrase "can" to "may". There is proof that the 6950s use a different VRAM chip, and that may cause some problems. I'm not trying to start an argument, but like you said, if everyone knows the risks of doing this why don't you just put a reminder anyway? It wouldn't wouldn't hurt.

Sorry if I made you mad, but I don't see why you are so opposed to this.

I'm opposed to this silly crusade by people like yourself, that are spreading these rumors. You say there is proof? Link it man. To be fair my frustration isn't with you, but with your comment. Your not the first person who has tried to post crap like that. I've seen dozens of threads from here, TPU, Tom's, etc., but I have yet to see the proof. I know that the 6950 uses different RAM modules than the 6970. So what? That proves nothing.

In addition, I tightened the timings on the RAM on my desktop too, as have many others, and you don't here people talking about how that kills it. Seriously this is such crap. Everyone knows the risks or they shouldn't really be overclocking in the first place. I don't feel the need for a caveat because I expect anyone trying to do this will take the 30 seconds to goolgle through some information and decide for themselves. To quip: This isn't McDonald's and I'm not pasting a coffee is hot on every post I make lol.

So yeah, I think I'll liken your claim of may damage card to someone claiming unicorns "may" exist. Nothing personal but I want some proof instead of rumor-mongering.

Well I agree with you, there is no real proof that it destroys the chip, as I previously stated, but there is proof that they use different modules. I am not saying you are wrong, but just pointing out that if these RAM modules run at different voltages, it could be harmful. As we all know though, different GPU BIOSs have different voltages, as seen on the legendary GTX 480, where core voltage varied from 1v to 1.1v. Your BIOS is obviously safe judging by the fact that you have been running for 6 months, but I would point out that you can't take responsibility for people using other 6970 BIOSs on their 6950s.

This card is only $10 more., I had two and they both unlocked, I don't know if they still make them unlockable though.

Your absolutely right they use different modules. In one of the posts around here on OCN I even took the trouble to find the labeling for each module on the 6970's vs the 6950's. But even if they are differen't voltages, it's unlikely to be more than a .1 difference. (For the record I maybe slightly off on that. A gentleman on TPU wrote a hypothesis about the voltage differences based off the differences in the performance of the 6970/50 at identical clock speeds.) And I really doubt that .1V will make a difference even regarding VRAM. It certainly doesn't in desktop RAM.
