my coworker swears by this game, but i don't know if i can trust his taste. i finally went and bought it, it arrives tomorow from amazon.com and now that i'm watching outdated gameplay and reviews i remember why i didn't get it before.
have most of the gripes mentioned in the reviews been attended to?
what im hoping for is a casual mmo that doesnt require job-like commitment like world of warcraft.
most gameplay i have seen is groups of 5-8 players circling one stupid looking mob and smashing it for it 10 minutes...

Not really.
Some of the issues have been remedied but for the most part getting FFXIV to be playable and fun requires nearly a complete overhaul of the game. It would actually be easier (and possibly faster) for Square to pull it off the market, re-make (mostly) it, and release it.

Its fun to play to a point, gotta grind alot. Missing sooo much content. Its free to play right now, so i guess if ur thinking about playing it after it gets good then it doesnt hurt to start now and fly through the new content right on to endgame.

The game honestly plays one thousand fold better then when it was released. But there is still very little content outside of Ginding, Crafting and the hourly Behest alliance.

I will give them credit in that they have fixed quite a bit...
- Fixed the horrid UI lag
- Overhauled the menus so they are no longer 5~6 layers deep
- Upped the amount of daily-quests that are available
- Added "Working" macros
- Added auto sort to inventory
- Map works now
- Parties no longer have "Phantom" member that you can't assist
and tons and tons of other little fixes...

I am unfortunately still waiting for them to fix the following...
- Get rid of the fatigue system (80k xp a week per job/craft before it starts to kick in)
- Crashing to desktop if the game looses focus when in full screen
- SLI/Crossfire support
- Direct X 11 {Yes Please!}

Right now the game looks pretty, is functional and is fun enough that I have been logged in enough to have jobs at 23 and 28 (50 is current cap). You should have have fun once you get past the intro-tutorial and get out of the city. Just remember to press (-) and then look for the return option when you die. =P

thanks for the info. as for the fatigue system, i always wished there were servers in other MMOs that had such a concept so that casual players with limited weekly play time could keep up with the no-lifers lol.

The introduction can be a bit rough. After the combat tutorial they stick you in an instance that won't let you leave until you talk to the right person or three. Once that is out of the way head out to the nearest camp (should be marked on you map) then head back and get some levequests to complete at said camp (pretty sure you have to go to the camp and synch with the big crystal there first).

Also participate in Behest if you can get in. The NPC ($Camp Battlewarden) for Behest spawns at the top of the hour so keep an eye out for him as it is easy XP for a party up to 15 people.

Also take a look at lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com, I can't get to the site from work, but on the left side I believe there are links to guides and manuals. But like most MMOs you are left to figure out a good chunk of it on your own.
