GTX 580 into PSU?

post #1 of 26
Thread Starter
I'm so confused right now.

My motherboard came with 2 connectors that have 8 pins on one side and 2x6 pins on the other side that can be plugged into.

My PSU came with multiple PCI-e connectors. They have an 8 pin on one side (I assume for the PSU) and a 6 pin and 2 pin on the other side.

I have 2xGTX 580s and I'm trying to plug these into it right now, but I'm completely lost. The GTX 580 has a slot for an 8 pin and a slot for a 6 pin.

Can anyone please help?

On the 6+2 plugs the 2 disconnect letting you plug just the 6pin in.

Each 580 will need one 8pin and one 6pin plugged in.

Are you concerned about the extra 2 on the 6+2's? Im lost too.

Use the 6 pin connector and leave the 2 pin off.

The 6+2 goes into the 8 pin slot, and just move 2 of the pins away on the other to fit one into the 6 pin.

You plug the 8 pin into the 8 pin on the 580, and the 6+2 you only plug in the 6 pin portion and leave the extra 2 unconnected, those are only to turn a 6 pin into an 8 pin in case you've got a 5970, for example.

I'm still a bit confused. It's sorta getting clearer but...

Okay so the connector looks like this

:::-:~~~~~~~~~~~~::::

I'm confused because am I supposed to use 2 PCI-e cables? I use the 8-pin on one PCI-e and the 6-pin on another? Like this:

VIDEO:::-:~~~~~~~~~::::~~PSU
CARD::::~~~~~~~~~~:::-:~~PSU

???

Sorry

Yes, 2 cables per card so 4 in total.
