Low Power Options

Hey there.

As the title says, I'm looking for some low power options for a gpu upgrade to my dads 8600GT.

Now, all he does pretty much is play wow on his pc, and the occasional Torchlight and thats about it.

At the moment his psu is just a generic crappy 400w one and i doubt it would handle any vid cards that require external power.

Was thinking of getting the GT220 cause they're pretty cheap and looks to be a reasonable upgrade from the 8600GT (correct me if i'm wrong).

It's either that OR i get a cheap decent psu with enough grunt to run a 9800GT which i happen to have spare just sitting around doing nothing.

What do you guys think? GT220 or PSU and 9800GT.

Nearly forgot to mention his resolution is 1440x900.

PSU recommendations would be good cause i can't decide. haha

Also note I'm in australia and prices here suck.

Thanks

Hey mate, you have quite a few questions. Here's what I've been thinking:
*a G220 isn't an upgrade for the 8600GT
*400W is plenty even for a 6870, it will power a 9800GT with (much) room to spare, I'm 99% sure. The 1% left is for the case the PSU is really low quality and old, but looking at your rig I doubt you left your father's rig on such a PSU.

My advice, if the PSU is decent quality, is to put the 9800GT on and then put it thru some tests: 3DMark, a few games and monitor the voltage of different rails from the PSU with Speedfan. If they keep within 10% of the base values the PSU is good. If by any chance the PSU is not good, then an Antec Earthwatts 380W is ideal. I've written a blog post on why too much wattage from a PSU can actually harm a rig.

Thanks for the reply.

Yea after doing some more reading around i think your right about the GT220, everywhere I've looked everyone says they're crap.

And yea i agree a QUALITY 400w psu is good enough to run a pretty reasonable setup but this is (sadly) just one of those generic piece of crap that shouldn't even be sold psu's that come in cheapo cases when you buy em.

So yea i think i'll get an antec earthwatts of some sort and slap the 9800GT in.

Time to hand it down to the old man and then play the waiting game to upgrade my 260 to a 560 Ti.
