eReader Basic Questions

Thread Starter
I want to better understand the functionality of an ereader. Obviously it varies on model and brand, but here's a few basic questions:

Can they display any pdf file?
Can they only display books?
Are they like iTunes songs are to ipods? Only certain file types?

Can I use an ereader with a digital copy of a textbook?
Will it work will with texts that aren't just text, but have pictures and such?

Can you surf the web? Can you use an online digital copy of a school textbook that expires after a given amount of time?

Thanks
