Warning: Newegg ASUS, MSI, etc Open Box cards may not have full warranty!

Newegg has a wide selection of OB cards for sale almost everyday; most of the time; they are heavily discounted. Great for buyers who do not want to pay the full amount right?

Well that answer depends on what you get.

I recently ordered two OB cards from Newegg. Both were Asus. One was a GTX 460 and the other one was a HD 6950.

I did not notice it until a couple days ago, but the two items were not OB, they were manufacture refurbished.

TFB said very eloquently in OT:

Open box is when someone buys something and decide they don't want it anymore within the buyer's remorse period.

Refurbished is when someone buys something and has trouble getting it to work (or it is a little broken but not broken to the point of scrapping it out) and returns it. It is tested for quality and possibly repaired and then repackaged and sold.

On Newegg's site, they define Open Box as:
Quote:
Open Box items have been opened and touched and/or returned. Because they originate from different situations, they may or may not include accessories, documentation or retail packaging. Refurbishment is done by the manufacturer. Open Box products are warranted for only 30 days. We recommend that you try out your Open Box product immediately after receiving it.

You be the judge on this one.

Imho, the two are very different. Hell, Newegg sells things that are marked OB and refurbished, making it seem that the two are different.

Had I not checked the seal of the box, I would have never figured out that the items I had bought are only eligible for limited 3 month local warranty! This seriously ruins the value of OB.

I am very displeased with Newegg, and just want warn those who have bought OB GPUs (Asus, MSI, and other serial based warranty cards) to check the seal.

Some of you may have gotten a legit OB and congrats, you got lucky (or maybe I was unlucky).

Update 1: The only concern here is if we are able to discern a undamaged card from a damaged card. I assume that MSI would make this info transparent.

Update 2: Newegg emails me back saying I have NO Manufacture warranty.

Update 3: Asus rep confirming that I have warranty until end of 2013. Newegg rep is dumb. biggrin.gif

Kind of the reason I stopped purchasing from newegg. I usually buy all of my stuff from amazon these days, especially with free prime for college students. 1 day shipping for 4$ is so satisfying +the best customer service.

When it comes to electronics, I never buy open box. Mostly because it is a risk I dont want to take. I would rather pay the extra and be certain.

Very true, but the thing is that since Asus, MSI, Gigabyte warranties are serial based, any item (if they were truly OB) will still have manufacture warranty.

So even if the card is DOA or defective, the person can still return the card to the manufacture, get it replaced and still save a bunch of money.

Thank you for reiterating what Newegg tells you when you choose to purchase an open box item. They tell you everything that you just posted.

I really had to dig that up on their website. It shouldn't be hidden like that. I am simply making people aware of the fact that the cards may not have full warranty. In fact, most people think completely the opposite.

I would be very disappointed also. Well maybe these cards will go on to outlast any card you ever had.
