Calibrating your LG as mentioned above will help, but will not deliver performance equal to your iMAC. If color accuracy/color precision are important (such as for photography, etc.), then you will need to invest in a PVA or IPS panel. There is really no lower cost way.

There are a few moderate cost PVA/IPS panels available. Here is an HP model that is a reasonable price for the color performance:

I was assuming this most likely this is the case, IPS vs TN panel in photo color accuracy, the difference can be night and day. In which IPS panels come out on top.
