ATI Crossfire performance

Thread Starter
So I recently bought another HD5850 and am now connected them as crossfire.

I attached 2 crossfire bridges had a bunch of driver issues, but those are all fixed (I think!)

I first noticed some problems when playing Heroes of Newerth where with a single card I had absolutely no graphics problems at all (max graphics and everything). Now with 2 cards, I get graphics lag and dropping frames all over the place, can cause some problems in large battles, and even just scrolling across the screen.

The second problem I noticed was when running Furmark it was running hot at about 90 degrees (celcius) and still performance wasn't very good (I cant remember exact FPS, I will check again when I get home)

I ran GPUz and when selecting the main card it said crossfire was enabled but when the second card was selected it said it wasn't.

Another problem was in BFBC2 I get huge graphics glitches where half or 70% of the screen flickers black rapidly for a few seconds and then returns to normal. It doesn't happen too often, but I know it SHOULDN'T because it never did on 1 card.

CCC says crossfire is enabled, but in the overdrive section (I'm not 100% sure of this, again I will check later) I believe the second GPU has activity of 0% and fan speed always at 0%.

I have installed the latest CCC and the latest Crossfire profiles. What else needs to be done?

TL;DR: single card performance better then crossfire. graphics glitches and frame dropping in games. I have installed the latest crossfire profiles. Help.

First thing that comes to mind is your PSU is bad. Second is that try each card individually. Check temps for both cards. Do a clean Install of Driver or even a Clean Windows format.

Brand new 850W Corsair modular PSU, The first one I bought was busted but I returned and got this one, there's not problem with it I hope.... 850W should be more then enough for these, I have the 2 cards and 3 HDD's and no overclocking.

Both cards work I know for sure, When I had drivers issues i was afraid that the second card was broken, So I used the both separately to make sure but I will run some more furmark on each card and check the temps etc etc.

850W is more than enough. I've got a similar enough setup, and I am overclocking. It certainly sounds like drivers. I assume you got the 11.2 drivers just released today?

As for CCC, mine shows no activity on the second card too when not in use, but it does show me fan speed. So that's certainly odd. Also, when I check GPU-Z, both cards show Crossfired on my end. I don't know man /shrug.

Might uninstall all drivers then reboot, reinstall drivers and go from there if you haven't already.

New drivers today? oooo I might give them a shot, Nah I installed the new ones from about 2 weeks ago. So I will do a complete uninstall of all drivers and then fresh install the new 11.2's

Might uninstall all drivers then reboot, reinstall drivers and go from there if you haven't already.

The second card only kicks in on full screen 3D applications if I remember correctly. You'll see the Crossfire logo in the top right corner (if you have it enabled, right click on the CCC icon, go to one of you cards then go to Crossfire settings and Check "Show CrossfireX status icon") when Crossfire is running. Like in this picture:

34834_484287731934_686656934_6128306_2683109_n.jpg

If you Alt-Tab fast enough, from a full screen game to an already opened Overdrive, you should see the second GPUs activity drop rapidly.

Also make sure to install the game profiles for CCC aswell. These in general help with performance for games run in Crossfire. You can download them from the same place you downloaded the ATi drivers from on the AMD/ATi website.

Yeah, Heroes of Newerth and Battlefield both had the crossfire logo, but still the performance wasn't as good as a single, and I have installed the game profiles.

I had a similar problem where 1 Card was AS GOOD as 2 cards.

What i did is i uninstalled ALL DRIVERS including the ones from AMD / ATI.
I shut down my computer right after.
Plugged BOTH graphic cards with the pci bridge.
went to the ATI website and downloaded and installed the drivers again
now 2 is better than 1 wink.gif
the main problem is that when i put the second card after i bought it, only windows 7 installed the crap for me. I needed to install the ATI drivers/utilities thing WTIH BOTH CARDS IN THE COMPUTER. BECAUSE, THE ATI INSTALLATION CRAP DETECTS WHAT HARDWARE YOU HAVE BEFORE IT INSTALLS, SO BASICALLY IT SAW I HAD 2 CARDS IN MY COMPUTER AND INSTALLED THE RIGHT DRIVERS AND FROM THEN ON IT WORKED.

hopefully this works for you smile.gif
