Well which is it?! Games vs violence at its finest.

Im an avid gamer. Im not violent at all. I love games. I love people. Kind of.

My brother on the other hand is violent. He has issues when it comes down to human interaction, hes really shy, but when hes angry he shows it. This anger is always present when he plays video games.

I dont think games make you more angry, i just think they bring the angry out of angry people. You know the kind of people that dont get their way and start crying, or go and kill their mom. Wait what?! ***.. yeah heres a contradicting game website that kinda throws their stories into a garble...

Make of it what you will.

Ive linked the stories just in case any one was wondering where to find them.

The constant exposure to anything does desensitize you to it because it becomes very normal. You become numb to whatever it is.

For example (and I am not trying to be funny here): watch hardcore porn every single day for 1 solid month. And then go 1 year without it and then watch just one porn video after that 1 year. I think you already know what the entire experience would be like.

Now, let's get back to the violence in video games. I'll compare 2 people who are otherwise identical: the first guy has never been exposed to any violence in any games - not even in movies or in real life. The 2nd guy plays games every single day or week that have a moderate amount of violence in them.

Ok, so now let's put these 2 guys in a real life situation where they are at the same place at the same time. Now let's pretend something happens between 3 people who are nearby where it causes a violent fight to erupt between those 3 people (I wanted to use 2 people, but I'm already using 2 guys in my example). The guy who's never been exposed to violence would have a VERY different reaction than the guy who's been exposed to it in video games (or in movies) on several occasions, and I think you can already tell me what the differences will be between their reactions.

Am I saying the 2nd guy is desensitized? Absolutely! This is because seeing violent things is normal to him.

It's just like anything: after a while of regular exposure to something, you become a bit numb to it.

Very true, the 1st guy who was exposed would, possibly, be like oh cool a fight, and edge it on.

The second guy who was never exposed to violence in media or life, would be like, oh noes a fight and may be scared for themselves, and teh people fighting.

Exactly.

It's just like anything: with enough regular exposure to the thing in question, you become desensitized to it. It becomes normal. In some case, you even become bored by it. In other words, where once it did something to you (or for you), it begins to do absolutely nothing to you (or for) you after a while.

So, I think that the way that they did their study is absolutely stupid. I mean nothing personal by this to you, but rather to the so-called "researchers" who held the study.

Y'know the story about how that mom took her son's Playstation away and was then murdered by him? I don't know the whole story, but I can bet that she interrupted his gaming session which means he was probably already in a fighting mood. I don't know about you, but I get so angry at games sometimes that I could literally murder a real person if the timing were right.

I wouldnt go as far as harming someone, but ive gotten mad at competitions, and lan parties to wear i rage quit and left. Its especially true when your losing or being taunted in game.

The kid was probably playing Cod, was on a dying streak, started screaming at the TV so his mom took it away.

Sad part is i could see my brother doing this.

In a sense.

Go without chocolate for exactly 1 month, and then have 1 piece after that. I promise you that you'll enjoy that 1 single piece noticeably more than the chocolate you're having every single day (it is every day, isn't it?)...

Is there anything else?

It's not that you are completely numb to it, but it is that you are numb to it to a certain extent.

It's ridiculous. Gaming experience and real life experience are two VASTLY different things. I've been in a fight once, I've seen several fights (one was particularly nasty) and honestly, when I'm playing violent video games I'm not experiencing even a shred of what I felt during real exposure to violence. Games are just moving pictures you interact with in the comfort of your home, they don't look real, they don't feel real, the whole experience is a fake one.

Well, it also the depends on the nature of people... I mean there are people around who don't play violent games and explode at the smallest incident (dad). My friend plays hardcore stuff like man hunt and so on, and he does a social study ike helping disabled, low life and so on. and he is tolerant and not violent at all :S

+1

I agree with this statement as well as desensitized people through media. I think it really goes both ways. Some people have a more violent nature or tolerance to violence which is only revealed when those circumstances arise. There is no doubt that ones environment or what one is exposed to can contribute to violence or numbness to it, but as complex as the humankind is, it's undeniable that violent traits or acceptance to it can exist in the absence of outside influence.
