Well which is it?! Games vs violence at its finest. - Page 2

I'd say games have desensitized me not going to lie. But I've seen some worse stuff in real life. Sure violent games are desensitizing but its not going to make me go kill someone. Trade the ps3 with something else the kid really loved. I bet if the mom took the other thing he really liked away he would of done the same thing... if someones a psycho there a psycho..Not to mention we let little kids get away with whatever they want

I agree with it all depending on the person. When I play a video game, no matter how graphic or violent it is, I understand that it isn't real. Just because in a game I am willing to run up and stab or shoot someone doesn't mean that it's going to make me any more likely to do it in real life. In the case of the boy who killed his mom, my bet is that the kid was just obsessive. My little brother is that way, and all he plays is Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, neither of which are in any way violent, but when my parents make him quit he gets upset and sometimes mad. It's not a matter of the content of the game, but rather of the personality of the player. Guns don't shoot people, and pencils don't write stories.

Don't let your brain fool you.

No matter how logical and methodical you are, what you see and do in your life constitutes your reactions and thoughts regarding it. No matter your mental control, constant exposure changes your perception to anything.

People get angry for more reasons than just violence in games. If someone kills their mother for taking their PS3, it probably isn't because they saw it in a game. No matter your desensitization to violence, you don't kill your mother without having serious mental or social problems outside of video games.

It is a complicated problem that has influences well outside video games, but I think it is a fact that any violence on a repeated basis will desensitize you to it. Even if it is catching 5 min of the news every morning.

To both (or everyone, I guess):

I think it's all about the timing.

For example: when I was young, I had the original Game Boy and a Sega Game Gear. There was both a bad time for my parents to take those systems away from me, and there was a good time. The good time for them to do it was when it had been several hours or more since I had last touched the systems and wasn't really interested in playing them again yet. This way they could discuss it with me first and then take them away. Sure, I'd be mad, but nothing like if they were to interrupt me during a game - especially if that game were pissing me off (that is, if I was absolutely determined to start doing better).

So, it's all about the timing. I can almost guarantee you that the son who killed his mother was probably angrily interrupted by his mother. He probably raged at the game, and she probably felt it was the last straw and entered the room all angry.

The kid raging in that YouTube video was probably interrupted too. Or, it was timed in such a way where he was all mentally prepared to sit down and play the game when bam: his parents said NO! That's happened to me before: I'd come home from school only to find that I couldn't use the computer because my parents had taken the power cable as punishment for something I did wrong. So, I would rage.

So it's also about the way the parents handle it. But it's also what the 'child' is exposed to every single day.

Have any of you here on OCN seen me rage really hard on here and get into some heated fights? If you have, then I have a secret to tell you: those times on OCN were back when I would spend 5-6 hours playing some video game like Crysis, CoD4-MW, or Mirror's Edge (the only games I really enjoyed). Plus, I was playing those games every single day. So, I'd come here immediately after exiting the game and I was primed to fight at the drop of a hat. Regardless of how well I did in the game, I was still primed and ready to go. Of course, I was especially ready if I did horribly.

But I haven't played a single video game for about 8 months, and I feel absolutely great. I even used to argue with my parents hard-core almost every other weekend, but we haven't argued for at least 6-7 months now. heh

Now, let's get back to the violence in video games. I'll compare 2 people who are otherwise identical: the first guy has never been exposed to any violence in any games - not even in movies or in real life. The 2nd guy plays games every single day or week that have a moderate amount of violence in them.

Ok, so now let's put these 2 guys in a real life situation where they are at the same place at the same time. Now let's pretend something happens between 3 people who are nearby where it causes a violent fight to erupt between those 3 people (I wanted to use 2 people, but I'm already using 2 guys in my example). The guy who's never been exposed to violence would have a VERY different reaction than the guy who's been exposed to it in video games (or in movies) on several occasions, and I think you can already tell me what the differences will be between their reactions.

Am I saying the 2nd guy is desensitized? Absolutely! This is because seeing violent things is normal to him.

It's just like anything: after a while of regular exposure to something, you become a bit numb to it.

Wow. If your in a prison and see fights, THAT IS DESENSITIZING. Please can you make a comparison of real life VS games. You play a UFC game, you think your adrenalines pumping? You think its anything like what a actual fight is like? My friend grew up in Socal, he saw fights daily, and weekly people got shipped off to the hospital for injuries. That is desensitizing, not seeing violence in a game and then when someone gets punched in the face your like "oh whatever i see that all the time IN GAMES"

PS: I play violent video games everyday as much as i can, i avoid EVERY confrontation that i can. Meaning that can reverse your theory and use it as a "video games have tought me the consequences of fighting, therefore i dont do it"

Did I say that it's the same as real life? I didn't try to. So if you think I said that, then I apologize for misleading you (seriously).

Try to understand what I'm saying in more of a realistic sense/context as it applies to most people, such as gamers. I am not open to exceptions.
