i5-2500k @5GHz on Air? Pipe dream or reality? - Page 5

post #41 of 84
Just started into testing my new setup and I think the TIM is wrong. I'm getting 1 core just over 80 @4.8ghz 1.4vcore. The rest stay under the 80 mark. Others are posting lower temps for the 212 and IBT, and I certainly didn't do my TIM like that previous link. If I have any room for improvement thru reapplying, I should be able to hit 5ghz.

Other people are worried about high temps, I used to never run my C2D over 65, but it has a lower tjmax too. I figured 10c for breathing room, gives me 75 at most, which is 10c below the max of 85c for C2D, at the hardest it will ever be pushed. So if the tjmax is now ~100 for 2500k then you can presumably go to at least 85 and still be the same distance away from tjmax. So no worries.

I'm gonna reapply the TIM and see what happens. It's Antec Formula 5 (sounds familiar) some generic crap I got at the local Staples just cuz I needed some Any1 know if it's good? I'll post back with temps.

How much tim are you using? If you think you're using too much, you probably are. 80 is the absolute max you want to go really. I daren't go above 70 personally.

It could just be your cooler though. I get a load temp of 65 with 1.37v. But i'm using a massive cooler with 2 high speed server fans attached.

What cooler do you have? A hyper-212?

There's really no data on what's a safe voltage and/or temp right now.

Playing it safe to me means <= 1.35V and/or <= 75C.

For my upcoming 5GHz stability test, I'm personally shooting for <= 1.45V and/or <= 85C.

I agree here. I like my temps under 65 as well. I must have a really good chip because mine is 24/7 stable at 1.312v (load - that is 1.280v in the BIOS). After a few hours of BFBC2, my max temp is 51C. I tried going to 5 Ghz but could only get 30 minutes of PRIME blend @ 1.375v (load) but my temps hit 71C and I didn't want to risk going higher just for a number.

If I had a better cooler, this thing could easily hit 5 stable with normal temps...on air

Your chip sounds very much like mine, same clocks at similar voltages.
I did do an hour of prime at 5ghz loading at 1.35 - 1.36V on air, ran it in a chilly room though, didn't want to abuse it with stability tests since I bought it to abuse with benchmarks.
I still have to get another waterbock that fits the board properly, just found the mounting ring for my h50 but that isn't much better than air.

What motherboard and PLL are you at? It looks like I would need a couple clicks higher than you for 5.0 Ghz - but since the only real benefit right now is getting my name in the club, I think I'll wait. I'd rather keep this chip for a few days - not start it on fire...

The OP is exceptionally bold - if I had temps in the 80's and 90's, the chip would be cooled by my tears

Using a Gigabyte p67a-ud4 b3, I just left the pll on auto for the testing. I've read about a few people failing after an hour so I probably would need more V for full 24/7 stability there, but the SB rig isn't a daily driver yet.
I know what you mean about the temps, I hate to see high temperatures. Although at the same time I have no problem with high voltage as long as I can keep it cold when loading it up.

Yep, 212 soon to be water. Before I reapplied the TIM, I was limited to ~1.42 vcore. Now I can hit over 1.5 before I get limited by the same temps. My 212 had imperfections in the base so I figured more TIM rather than less. There were a couple spots that even lapping wouldn't remove. But now I'm good, so cool beans. Thanks for the reply Boyboyd, I can now keep it under 80c @1.4 4.8ghz

edit- so for the record that's 80c max in IBT, 70c max in games and apps, which is a LONG way from 98c tjmax! I hope everyone's at least comfortable with up to 80c on these chips, I've been testing even up to low 90's with no problem. I've passed a short IBT 5ghz @ 1.46 vcore and temps around high 80's. while playing games the chip should stay under mid to high 70's which could be run 24-7 if I desired. But it def seems the wall for these chips is around 4.8ghz and any more is just inefficient.

Ok, so I ran Prime95 for an hour 1.3vcore, 4.5ghz, max temp 74c, idle ~42c-
Does that look good? Still seems my temps are high. I may have a crappy base on this thing, there were actual pin holes large enough to stick a pencil lead into the base, it's why I used more TIM than usual.

Edit- I just ran IBT, I always thought it ran harder, come to find it was about 5c less than P95. I'm running stock fan on the 212 btw. Does anyone know if that P95/SB flaw will even matter? I mean, is it going to crash your system a lot if it's stable on IBT and not P95? Or will it be <.01% crash rate, something insignificant?

Edit-idle temps ~34-35c. meh
