Hd 6850 Video Card Problem?

Hey there,

I recently had a PC made by NCIX and I've been noticing some issues with my computer..
After about an hour of playing CS:Source my monitor would randomly go black and say "No Signal"...which is really weird...my temps are fine..airflow is really good..

At the same time..my computer then freezes and the sound loops forever..the computer stays on and nothing shuts off..the only thing I can do at that moment is do a hard reset (can't even pull a mini-dump to debug)

Come to think of it, BFBC2 seems to also have weird textures at certain parts of the game that would look like they're blinking...and I'm not entirely too sure if they are artifacts..
I've looked on the internet for people with similar problems..and I found a few but with no solution...

I hope anyone with an HD 6850 can shed some light or perhaps share your own experiences if any..
Any advice would be helpful..

Specs:
i5-760 2.8 temps 23-26/40-45 idle/load
Hyper Plus 212 push/pull
Gigabyte HD 6850 775/1005(stock) temps 28-32/48-50 idle/load
(MSI Afterburner 2.1.0 beta 7 - custom fan settings)
Sabertooth 55i
(2x4GB) Ripjaws 1333 9-9-9-24
Corsair TX750W
WD Black 1TB
Win7 64bit

Tests Done:
OCCT - [1HR] with no report of error
Memtest86+ - 5 Passes with no error

hey srafig4, thank you for your reply..I actually had this done almost exactly when that new BIOS was released. It fixed the high fan speed during idle

Cheers.

FYI: My gaming temps during CS: Source were usually between 48-54 Degrees Celsius. FPS averaging around 299 with everything maxed out.

Edit: I let OCCT run for an hour straight and completed the test without errors. 950/1150 (stock voltage)

Memtest86+ tested 5 Passes without errors reported.

Sounds like a video problem to me. Try completely removing the existing display driver and installing ONLY the latest one for your vid card. Use Drive Sweeper to completely eradicate all of the remnants of the old driver. That's what I've noticed causes that problem more times than not.

Make sure that your motherboard chipset drivers are up to date as well. DO NOT download or install ANY drivers from Windows Update.

If you have been getting a lot of BSOD's and shutdowns do yourself a big favor and do the following. First, open up an Elevated Command Prompt (re: Run As Administrator), type in sfc /scannow, then hit enter. This should take about 10 to 20 minutes depending on what it finds. After that finishes open up another Elevated Command Prompt and type in chkdsk /r and hit enter. You will be prompted that it can't run now and do you want to run it the next time the system boots. Type in Y, hit enter, then reboot the computer and let it run. Depending on the size of the OS partition and how many problems it finds and needs to fix this could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more as it is very thorough.

What happens is that when the system shuts down like it does when you pull the plug, have a power outage, BSOD, etc. without going through the normal Windows Shutdown Routine some of the files that are open become corrupted and/or some of the clusters on the hard drive become corrupted. Running those two utilities (sfc is System File Checker) will normally clean up and fix the problems leaving you with a more stable and responsive system. Otherwise the corruption leads to more problems. less stability, loss of performance, and quite often more corruption.

I normally run these two utilities once a month or so even if I don't have any problems, and anytime I have some problems.

Thanks a million Papasmurf!!!
I actually haven't been getting any BSOD's thankfully, my comp only hangs like I explained after an hour of CS:Source with the sound looping over and over.

I'm going to try everything you've advised and let you know if it still acts up or not.

Again I really appreciate all your time and help, and I'm sure a lot of other members feel the same

Good news! My problem seems to have disappeared...what a relief! I ended up playing CSS for more then 3 hours with no sudden shut downs

I'm not entirely sure, exactly, what caused the issue...I think perhaps it may have been windows update? After reading what you told me to do I did the following.

System Restore (Restored just before Windows Update)
Uninstalled CCC/Display Drivers and used Drive Sweeper (This program is awesome thanks for this!)

sfc /scannow
chkdsk /r (These are now stickied on my monitor to remind me to run these atleast once a month )

Some other questions:
Do you not recommend updating through Windows Update? You're the second person to say this and I haven't really done much research on the net yet about this..but apparently this causes driver issues (especially AMD/ATI drivers[correct me if I am wrong])

Regarding the sfc I got this message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
I'm looking into this now and I'm guessing I'll find my answer (after I do more research) in the CBS.log file

Thanks again Papasmurf! X)

Disable windows update and just watch forums/sites that will let you know when needed fixes come out. Even if that didn't screw with your system, I would still recommend it.

It's disabled, I manually just updated it thinking it was a good thing..I had no idea it would potentially cause errors in my system

Is there such a thread on OCN I could subscribe too?

Thanks for your time and info Horsemama1956 much appreciated!

Repped!

I recommend setting Windows Update to manual, then waiting about a week after Patchg Tuesday to see if there are reports of any problems with any of them. Only do updates to Windows and other Microsoft Products like Office, etc. The only drivers to update through Windows Update would be Microsoft Hardware Devices like Mice, etc. Any and all other device drivers should be downloaded directly from the hardware manufacturer.

The only time to update device drivers through Windows Update is on older systems that the manufacturer hasn't released Windows 7 drivers for. This tends to be more for older laptops that were manufactured prior to the release of Windows Vista. Quite often manufacturer's like Toshiba don't release Win 7 drivers for these older systems, but the hardware is actually supported by Windows 7 making Windows Update the best way to get them. Older systems (especially laptops and business desktops) like that aren't cutting edge and aren't overclocked so they don't stress the hardware enough to cause problems with these generic drivers. It's gaming and overclocked systems that push the envelope that have problems with these generic drivers. They are fine for getting the initial setup, but as soon as one can get the vendor specific drives can be downloaded and installed the better.

Depending on what the error messages are that you find in the CBS.log you might need to do a repair install of Windows to fix the problem.

Finally, one of the main causes of the error message of "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" when running sfc /scannow is using a pirated copy of Windows 7 or a crack to circumvent the validation process. I can't remember the specific file that is affected, but sfc /scannow catches to modified validation file and won't fix it. Not saying that this is the case here. Just throwing that out.
