oh... and does the backplate affect the card temps in some kind of way or is it only there for avoding the pcb to flex with the card's own weight?

I had some issues with my 6970, so I just RMA'ed. My replacement card now has the XFX logo etched in the back vent, but there is no longer a black backplate on the PCB. (See Photos)

The new card seems to be working great. It also seems that they changed the fan. It looks the same, but the speed ramp-ups if you set it manually are much more gradual. The fan does seem to "whine" less now though, which is good.

The weird thing is that they were both Rev. 1.1, with no changes in model numbers. Is this normal?
looks like amd has mysteriously made some changes for sure

It's to protect the card from damage and/or looks. It doesn't prevent flex because the card will still flex axially and it doesn't cool because it doesn't touch any parts of memory or vrms etc. Eye candy!

It's not mysterious dude. They said this a month ago when unlocking 6950s was the next best thing since sliced bread.

well okay I think I can live without this if that famous backplate doesn't do anything more than improving the looks or things like that

at least I know this is just a rev and not a 'half-assed' card that ended up in the hands of a poor soul

thanks to everyone for you help

If you ordered from Newegg you can call and inform them the product you received was not the one as advertised on the page and they should refund you 100% no restocking fee. I've done this before

yea but the only problem is that I'm from Uruguay and I bought it locally so I'd have to send the card back to the states if I wanted to do sth like that
