How isnt Steam getting sued for being a monopoly?

Hoping this is the best forum for this thread...

First, I LOVE STEAM. I'm one of its biggest supporters both with purchasing games for myself, gifting games to others, and defending Steam here when it's being unfairly bashed. Steam's deals are amazing, I'm just starting to wonder if they arent too good to last.

So... How isnt Steam getting sued for being a monopoly and abusing that position to under cut the competition pricewise?

Here's my example it seems everywhere its Square Enix Week- Steam, GFWL, Direct2Drive ect ect. But Steam is still managing to offer many of the largest discounts- Daily Games @ 75% off, and the entire Square Enix Library for 88% off. Is this no different than a larger retailer using its clout to get a better deal (ex .Walmart)? Is Steam a true monopoly and is this behavior only permitted because of some legal loopholes regarding digital distribution?

I know this alot of questions, just wondering if people have opinions on this or maybe a business background and know more about the situation.

walmart.

No seriously, they don't make a product they sell a product, and don't control the product.

on top of that they are not the only distributor for such items and if they started price gouging people you'd by elsewhere as would I.

they are no where near being a monopoly.

Honestly I don't care about Steam being a monopoly or anything. If Steam can offer better service and price, well guess who I'm going with. They manage to make DRM not irritating, conveniently combine all my games into one account, the Valve division offers great stuff (and not following the $60 game trend - Portal 2!), and they're just better than other game companies. If other places want to compete, they will need to step up their services or stop trying to maximize profit and lower their prices.

Until they start doing anti-competitive practices and things that aren't just, Steam is always a good thing for me.

It's not Steam's fault that they're the most successful digital game distributor.

They were the first, they had plenty of time to gather costumers until any kind of competition showed up.

Their amazing discounts, I assume, are simply agreements they have with game developers, given the amount of games they sell.

They can afford to sell them at those prices during specials, and everyone still profits.

I completely agree. I'm just worried Steam is going to find themselves in a similar situation to Intel or MS, being sued for billions of dollars.

They're not even close to a monopoly. Like someone else said, Walmart.
Well, ok, it's like they're the ONLY walmart, but they're not doing anything anti-competitive to prevent other players in the same market.

To my knowledge Valve haven't treid to bully other companies offering the same service as they do. They have approached it the right way simply by offering the best service and cheap deals compared to their rivals. As opposed to the others (microsoft) you mentioned that are known for buying out and bullying smaller companies and using their weight unfairly to stay ahead in their field.

steam isn't much of a monopoly IMO

it isn't doing any anti competative stuff compared to MS as mentioned above

who cares? as long as we consumers get the best service!

While Steam is a monopoly (in a strict sense, according to four-firms concentration ratio), the crucial thing is they aren't selling their own product, and therefore don't control prices. The minute they try to force publishers to sell games at a certain price is the minute Steam will go back to only selling Valve games.

Steam is a lot like iTunes, though there is the very different point that developers in gaming have much more say than artists do (i.e. their label decides everything), so I don't envision Steam becoming "oppressive" anytime soon. Most likely never, they'd lose too much business.
