How isnt Steam getting sued for being a monopoly? - Page 3

Because alternative services like Good Old Games, Direct 2 Drive, Impulse and GamersGate exist and are continuing to thrive.
Saying Steam has a monopoly is like saying Apple has a monopoly in the smartphone market.

How can steam be a monopoly?
impulse also has massive sales and so does direct2drive and probably whatever other similar company

Their amazing discounts, I assume, are simply agreements they have with game developers, given the amount of games they sell.

They can afford to sell them at those prices during specials, and everyone still profits.
The problem isn't them being a monopoly, the problem lies were Steam receives propriety game keys exclusive to their site. Other sites sell retail keys but Steam sells their own in house keys. That's why you guys can link the games to your Steam account and retail copies you can't. Only a select few retail games can be linked to your Steam account if they are Steam approved. If you want X game on your Steam account, you have to buy it for Steam. This causes a competitive disadvantage in the market because Steam users are willing wait and in some cases and pay a higher price just to use it on Steam.

Sites like D2D etc. want to put an end to Steam's proprietary use of game keys so users will not be compelled to always buy from Steam because of an account.

Steam has LOTS of competition, how are they a monopoly? Another example is Amazon.com. They sell digital distribution as well. Just because a company has a very LARGE customer base doesn't make them monopolistic. It does however makes them a target. I'm sure just about every competition is looking for some flaw or hole to sue them or expose them on.

The problem with steam is it was forced down our throats. My first feeling of hate for steam was after buying MW2 from bestbuy. I got home, installed, steam installed, and i went ***? I was furious to find out the only way to play my new game was to connect to the steam service first. So from there, if i want to play all the new games, i have to use steam.

Personally, D2D ftw. I like my own digital copies. I activate, and they leave me alone.

+1 Most of my games now come from D2D also. When I had to clean/reinstall Steam because of an issue I had, each game had to be re-downloaded. My D2D games was still on my HDD. From that point on, my games are purchased from D2D. Each game is separate from the bunch, so if one game has a problem it doesn't affect the others.

Steam is in no way a monopoly, they provide a service that many other sites also provide. They just do it so much better than the others that they have cornered the market. That still doesn't make them a monopoly.

If Steam was a monopoly, they'd be overcharging. If there was no competition, they'd have no need to give discounts.

Wal-Mart still makes up for around 60 percent of video game sell through... now when it comes to PC, steam has done a lot for bringing PC back into the light, and thats a good thing... for many the platform was starting to become irrelevant.

I would say that steam is this or that, but the fact of the matter is, they offer a service that reduces distribution cost, and those cost mean more money for developers/publishers, and better deals for consumers... really, I have no complaints about it... in fact, up till this last year, I hated steam, then used it... and never looked back... most people I see bash direct d/l services, simply have not tried them.

Many publishers sell d/l copies that include a shipped copy as well, so theres that if your into modding that particular title. Being said, the more I use d/l the less I want to goto a gamestop/walmart and dick about with hastle/reserves/checkouts/smell.
