Statistics have shown that Digital Distribution overtook Retail Distribution in terms of units sold for the PC. Guess who is getting most of those numbers? Certainly not EA Download Manager!

Steam is the biggest digital distributor on the market. The cheaper their products are, the better their customer service is, and the more they get better overall in terms of digital distribution, the more customers they attract and the more revenue the make.

You sell products cheaper, you get more customers.......

Can't be a monopoloy because they don't own all game, or distribute them. They only have rights to some games, or really well over half of the more recent ones, and exclusive rights to valve. They are just the best at keeping customers around, and have created almost a facebook for gamers by giving them chat, and profile pages.

Okay, business 101

A monopoly implies there are no alternatives, there are many alternatives to steam method of purchasing games: retail stores, other digital distribution services, etc... And that they have control over the terms on which individuals can access games. It's possible you could argue that by requiring installation of steam that this is a monopolistic tactic, although this happens alot with software in other forms so I guess no one really minds.

Selling products at a loss en masse refers to product dumping and predatory pricing. This is a tricky one though in that the courts have to decide if they are charging less than fair value and injuring another party by doing so.

I'm sure valve has their legal behinds covered on this one.

Well, valve isn't totally exclusive to steam. They did release the orange box to xbox, so therefore not 100% steam, but damn close.

This is easy to answer, Because they are not a monopoly....They still sell boxed games in the store so you don't HAVE to go buy from steam, you can get a game from the store.

Not quite..... Steam is a distributor but is not the license holder, developer, or publisher for all games.

However, a distributor who is not the license holder, developer, or publisher for all games can still be a monopoly. If a distributor has enough market power to set prices, then there is a monoloply.
