Which HDD for storage?

Thread Starter
I've just recently upgraded from a RAID0 boot drive configuration to a Corsair Force series 120GB SSD.

At the moment I have a 500GB Seagate 7200.12 for storage, but I'm running out of free space. I'm looking into getting a 1TB internal HDD, but I'm not sure which drive would perform the best in my rig.

I'm mainly worried about transfer speeds when copying large files from the SSD to the storage drive. I won't be running any apps off of it so access time doesn't matter.

I've got 3 different drives picked out but I'm not sure which one would be the best. I need performance and reliability because I can't afford to buy 2x 1TB drives for a redundant array.

  1. Western Digital WD1001FALS = $87.99-$10 via promo code = $77.99
  2. Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ST31000528AS = $64.99
  3. Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HD103SJ = $64.99
I've never owned a Samsung HDD so I'm not too sure about their performance and reliability. I'd rather just spend the $64.99 for either the Seagate or Samsung, unless the transfer speeds of the WD Caviar Black drive is worth the extra ~$13.

The F3 is one of the fastest and most reliable HDD's available..

But the WD Black is a bit faster, is it worth the extra money? I don't think so but you do get a 5 year warranty with it while the Samsung only carries a 3 year one.

I'll argue that, having fixed thousands upon thousands of computer, Seagate is the most reliable Hard Disc Drive on the market, I have see more Samsung, Western Digitals, and Hitachi drives fail compared to Seagate, and this is a fact mate...

Having worked for a few tech shops, I've seen or had to sort out & test literally thousands of hard drives (maybe 10s of thousands?), lost count somewhere, so I'm highly qualified to make a statement about reliability..

Seagate is the one drive we rarely see go bad, and that is also a fact.

It doesn't make sense to get a 1 TB hard drive today, the 1.5 or 2 TB isn't much more expensive than the 1 TB, as Hard Disc Drive get cheaper, the larger the better, because you will be storing ALL of your data as backup, like most of us do..

In fact, it wouldn't hurt to buy two 1.5 TB Hard Disc Drives, $140 - $180, and use one strictly for Disc Image Backups of your Main SSD & Your Backup 1.5 TB Hard Drive, because it uses compression the space needed will be significantly smaller.

Furthermore, you will be able to completely restore your SSD should something happen, in probably less than 8 minutes! That's what I call TRUE protection! Also, speed isn't important for Backup Drives, not really. Furthermore, you should set up Power Options to turn your backup drive off after 10 minutes of no activity, this can greatly increase the life of ANY hard disc drive as it is mechanical..

Finally, you may want to use Karen's Tools (Karen's Replicator) or Cobian Backup to set up automated backup, this way you never lose a file you put on your SSD ever again! Being able to retrieve deleted files quickly is love at first recovery..

Hope this was helpful to you...

Seagate doesn't make a 7200.12 model larger than 1TB? The only 1.5TB Seagate on newegg is a 7200.11. How much of a hit in transfer speeds would I take if I got the 1.5TB 7200.11 vs. the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB or the Seagate 7200.12 1TB?

For Storage you dont need a fast drive. I personally would would a 2TB HDD. Something like Seagate 2TB LP.

I really can't afford a 2TB HDD. The most that I'll be able to spend on a new storage drive is about $80. Maybe I don't need a fast drive for storage, but I want one. I'd like to be able to copy large amounts of data from my SSD to the storage drive in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm thinking that the Western Digital Black 1TB is the drive I should get.

I agree with _GTech. Seagate. I have that exact model, 7200.12 on my HP Mediasmart Server and its been running 24x7 for almost 3 years now without a hitch.

I'm thinking that I'm going to go with the Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB HDD. I can get it today for $59.99 from newegg.com with a promo code.

The HD Tune benchmarks I've seen of this drive show it being fairly close in performance as my 7200.12 500GB, except for the burst rate.

Is this drive a good choice for my needs?

EDIT: Well now I'm not too sure if I should get this one or not after reading some reviews on newegg.com. It seems this drive has a long history of premature failure

I guess I'll just go with the 7200.12 1TB. I shouldn't need more than 1TB especially if I keep the 500GB installed.

What size is a 1TB HDD when formatted? About 930GB?

Yeah, make sure you avoid 7200.11 models...there is a reason why they came out with the 7200.12

And yes, you will get roughly 930-940GB out of 1TB.
