460 vs 6850 or other sub $200 card

It's time for an upgrade to the ol' system so I can get it gaming again. It'll be done on a fairly tight budget of $200, but hopefully I can still find something good enough.

Right now I'm leaning towards the GTX460 1GB, looks like a great meaty card for the price. My other option is the 6850, which from what I've seen can't quite perform as well as a 460.

My screen resolution is currently only 1366x768, however I'd like to get the best performing card I can incase of a monitor upgrade.

Are there any other cards I should be considering or is there any reason I should go the 6850 over the 460?

Please bare in mind that I live in Australia, so $200 cards on newegg don't necessarily translate to $200 cards in Aus. Thanks in advance for any input.

I would vote for the 5850 which must be just about 200$. A few days ago there was a Diamond 5850 1GB for 185$ on the egg, maybe it's still on sale. Despite being older it performs better than the other two and doesn't consume much more.

Otherwise the GTX 460 is faster than the 6850 and also OCs better, I would pick the 460 among these two.

Ah, the 5850, I hadn't thought of that mainly due to the low availability. I have found it in a few Australian stores for around the $250 mark, I could work it into my budget, but is it worth the extra $50?

5850 is your best best, Faster then either card and over clocks to 1Ghz core just as easy as the new 6000 series cards do

nope newer games gonna use tesselation(even if they use it mildly)
and 5xxx series suck at that...
in my opinion get the gtx 460 and oc it past 900 it will perform much better than gtx 470/hd5850/hd6850....
and get either the msi cyclone or if ur budget allows the msi hawk version(trust me the card is ice cold).....

Thanks and I'll take that into consideration. I guess if that really is the case then it looks like the 460 is still holding itself as the best bet.

I take it you had a 5850 or the likes prior to it then? If so, what is did you like better about the 460? More performance?

Thanks for the input so far everyone, really do appreciate it.

The 5850 has slightly more performance than the 460 by themselves, but the 460`s scale better with sli. So 2 460s are better than 2 5850s. they also handle tessalation better which is going to be important. when I say the 5850 is better by itself, were only talking 1000 vantage points. My 5850 at 950Mhz would get around 18,500, my hawk got around 17,500 (cant remember if i had it at 811mhz or 900mhz). Get a 460 hawk.

If the 6850/460 are the same price, get the 6850.

If the 460 is cheaper, get the 460. If it's vice versa, again, get the 6850.

Also please tell us which version of 460 and 6850 you're considering and each of their prices (is it a Cyclone/Hawk/DirectCU/stock versions etc).
