Best non-gargantuan cooler for 2600k @ 4.5ghz+ 24/7? - Page 2

From everything I've seen posted here and on other reviews, it seems like the Noctua NH-D14 and the Silver Arrow are the best Air Coolers on the market. These are also the largest you can get and will block RAM slots. The Archon won't have that issue but can block a PCI-e lane on P55, not too sure if they have that problem on the SB boards. It's still a really heavy cooler, though.

I don't know too much about H50/70, but from what I have heard they are no longer a good buy. New coolers are matching and out-performing them, but prices haven't dropped enough to recognize that.

I paid 50 bucks for my h50, had a couple ap 15's left from my old computer and this keeps my cpu @ 55 C @ 4.7 Ghz.

Took awhile to find anything useful, but CM 212+ about matches the H50 one fan but is less than half the price on newegg. The Archon, Silver Arrow and NH-D14 are all in a completely new league of performance. In that price range, those coolers are all much better choices. Picking between those three, however, is what the OP is concerned about, I believe.

If you're worried about RAM clearance, the Noctua has the movable fan option to give more clearance but the SA doesn't. The Archon completely avoids that problem, but doesn't cool quite as well even though it's at the same price.

Noctua NH-U12P?

Call me a Noctua fanboy, I totally am.

If I recall correctly you will only see a 4-6 degree difference or so between this and the NH-D14.

By the looks of this picture you should have no problems with RAM clearance but you should probably double check on that.

It might not be the best you can get for the price but as far as I'm concerned, the ease of use and quality construction is worth it.

Of the two, the Archon performs better. It appears to perform better than the SA and the D14, especially when you put two TY-140's on it. Since the TY-140 is so quiet, having two doesn't make much noise.

The Armageddon is not as good a cooler as the SA or D14, according to the reviews.

Apparently the Archon spills over slot 1. There are a few mb's that put a PCIE 2.0 x 16 there. But for the rest, the Archon is fine.

I must say I'm intrigued by the Prolimatech Genesis. With three Prolimatech Blue/Red Vortex fans it should be a really good cooler.

2 things of the Genesis worry me:
a. It looks very likely to me that the 2 fans will compete for air intake
b. A portion of the air exhausted down through the the horizontal heatsink might be sucked back into the vertical fan.

From what i saw of the genesis, you have to have low profile ram for that weird sideways heatsink part to fit.

I'll be using Ripjaws X so i don't think it'd work.

From the pics I saw, the Ripjaws should fit. They do publish specs.
