Probably not the best time to whip out a top dollar build.. but should be fun.

A couple questions:
1) Why not 6970's?
2) Why a 60 GB SSD for 'backups' ? This one really confuses me.

WD Greens are quite slow even for HDDs, look into Samsung F3s for more speed...or F4s for more capacity with similar speed....although if you're reusing the storage devices you have now-they'll work especially since you're planning on SSDs.

Top dollar build is fun. But a 990X won't un-bottleneck those 5870s anymore than if you got a i7 950 as compared to the old Q9650 (if there was any bottleneck at all to begin with). Should've got at least 3 GTX 580s to really bring out max performance.

As beers said, building ultra high end rig near the end of a chip cycle may not be the wisest of idea since the 990X successor is on the way, although that has been delayed until Q4 2011. So you still have a few months to be on top! Although there are reports that another extreme edition chip is on the way before the big socket 2011 drops.

Why a 990X?

I sense a fail thread.
Seems like a darn good build 2 me, the thing I won't recomend is buying such a processor... if you buy a 970 and overclock it a bit... saves you a ****load of monny, which you can use for the video card(s). And personally don't think your old proc was holding em back, you might notice some difference ofcourse but not more than a few fps.
