[ER] HDMI Investigated. Are Expensive Cables A Scam? - Page 3

yep, same thing they said about monster audio cables. Metal coat hangers worked just as good.

Sort of an interesting read, but hardly news; it's well known that HDMI cables make no difference in terms of quality.

The differences are none (aside from different HDMI specs). People forget how these things work.

Can you explain for us how these things work?

Really wishing this article came to my attention a couple of weeks ago. Spent a lot of time researching. What I found is that it doesn't matter for a lot of people because they only need shorter cables. But if you're getting something like 30 or 50 ft or something, then yeah, the error rates is increased and will come more often to the point where it is noticed to the human eyes/ears.

But $40 for a 6 ft at Walmart? Really? Bought mine for less than $5 at monoprice.com. Should be here tomorrow or Friday. Can't wait.

I normally don't comment on these topics, because this topic has been beaten half to death on home theatre websites for ages now, and even longer amongst enthusiast groups!

As mentioned previously, someone upgrading their $2-$10 will upgrade 10-20 times before ever reaching that $100.

Lets face it, that isn't the only reason store employees like them.
Gross margin is so big on those monster cables; pads the pay cheques nicely, and boosts your numbers for the month.
I mean the same thing goes for the USB cables, and audio cables sold in stores.

These cables are manufactured & tested on a standard (eg. hdmi 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc etc etc much like the binning process for our computer components)

If I spent 2 minutes to write out a blurb about how sexy the gold plating is, and how sexy the copper filaments are wrapped and how sexy the cable shielding is, I could probably charge 1000 times markup on cables as well.
People are paying for the romanticizing of manufacturing... in other words, Marketing.
(These manufacturers are doing very well at it too I might add!)

The reality is el cheapo cable comes from the same factory as those super-duper-pooper-scooper cables, which by no surprise at all, are all manufactured in... wait for it... China.

Lets also remember that the human eye/ears are only so sensitive (unless you've got a mutated genetics allowing you super vision/hearing capabilities)

Its a placebo effect.

Its not like a car or a house.
At least paying for an expensive car/or home & furnishings, you're almost always assured to be coddled in luxury. (assuming thats what you want)
Something tangible.

You cant wrap your ear drums and eyeballs with your hdmi cable and say "oooh, can you feel the luxury & quality of this cable? totally worth the $100!"

Its the same case with people buying Bose equipment.
Yep, I went there, and I said it.

TL;DR
Buy a nice inexpensive heavy gauge cable, and kick ass speakers/amp/pre-amp/receiver/& big screen and be done with it.

edit: oh sorry for off topic. We were discussing HDMI... Buy yourself a well built inexpensive HDMI and be done with it.

My step dad is one of those idiots that would pay $70 bucks for a HDMI cable even though I told him that he could get the same quality of cable for $5 bucks online.

He thinks he knows everything tech wise, when he doesn't. Granted he is a electrician he doesn't know anything when it comes to technology.
