Today, I got a Gigabyte HD 6850 (non-OC version) and I'm having some trouble installing it.

First I installed it in the main PCIEx16 slot, and everything worked fine. Performance was great, videos played smooth, etc. There was a a problem though. This card has a mild case of caps squealing.

Mild as in, can't hear it over the fans while running Heaven.

This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't because, using the card in the main x16 slot, my sound card has to go to the PCIEx1 slot directly above. And the mild squealing suddenly becomes a very annoying sound in my headphones. This happens in Heaven, happens running BC2 (it's more of a static sound there though, and gameplay sound usually covers it, but if it's quiet then it's noticeable). It even happens in CS:S main menu.

With my old card (8800gts 512, which had a louder squealing actually) I avoided it by putting it in the second x16 slot (working at x8) and putting the sound card in the second x1 slot (away from the northbridge heatsink). So I tried doing the same with my HD 6850. That was underwhelming.

3d performance took a hit, but not a very big one. I could live with that, but then videos were unplayable. The video would open, play about 1 sec at normal speed, then it would slow down while the audio still played (although distorting at points). It made watching videos impossible.

At that point, I tried switching the sound card back to the firxt x1 slot, uninstalling 11.2 drivers, installing 10.12 (several times), restarted BIOS to stock settings just in case, but nothing of this seemed to work.

So I put the card again in the first slot and it works perfect again. Doesn't seem a problem from the card itself or the drivers. Yet, the PCIE slots are fine too (the 8800GTS runs fine in the second slot).

TL;DR: New card works fine in first PCIE slot, feigns death in second PCIE slot.

The question is, has anyone noticed something similar? If so, is there any fix to be able to plug the card into the second slot?

P.D. Long time lurker, I hope the post is alright, and sorry if there's too much information.

Edit: I just noticed something else. While in the first slot (which works fine) the card has stable clocks. In idle it stays at idle clocks, if it has load it changes to load clocks.

When I tried the second slot, the card would jump from 2d to 3d to power saving clocks all the time. Maybe the reason for the unplayable videos and bad performance in 3d mode.
