Building a new system...what do I do when it turns on?

Thread Starter
After spending something like 4 months building my computer, researching and putting my parts together I finally ordered my parts to be picked up this Friday (look at my sig, feel free to comment). However I just realized I don't really know what to do once I POST :S
All I know is that I'm supposed to set my BIOS to boot from CD drive and stick in my windows 7 OS CD. I ask you guys, what am I supposed to do? How should I start up my pc? Where do I download drivers, what programs would I need etc.

Also I'd like to thank overclock.net for being one he'll of a resource these past few months, you guys are Awesome!

Ok first thing, go into the BIOS and make sure everything is recognized and change it to how you want it to be, next pop in windows 7 disc, boot from cd and install, after that install drivers and programs, drivers should be from offline NEVER use the cd's that come with them.

http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ZYgjt71bzlh62Zk9

Website for drivers, Install and reboot. i then go and install all the necessary stuff like flash java etc, and do all the windows update i need. After that i will make a restore point so i can go back to that point if anything messes up.

then it is up to you what you install.

As far as the bio's go you can usually not mess with it and still be able to boot up. As you mentioned set your first boot device as the cd drive and install windows onto your hdd. Other stuff i start to tweek after i have my windows all setup and stuff.

bios should already be boot from cd drive by default.

just put in windows 7 dvd, make sure you pick the right drive to install windows.

also, be connected to the internet. If you plan on using wireless internet or something, move your computer next to your router and wire it up. Then the internet will do the rest.

I recommend not using any of the CD/DVDs besides the windows 7 one.
Everything else should be gotten off the internet.

For AMD video card, I believe 11.2 CCC is out. So I'd download that.

After Windows is installed, I'd check to make sure everything is working. Goto Device Manager and make sure everythings there.

You should also check in the BIOS make sure all your RAM is there, and its at the right speed.

Connect only your primary boot drive, probably your 1TB WD black, to install windows on to first. If you have both connected at the start windows will create a visible systems partition. You do not want this to be displayed with your drives.

EDIT: Then go here and get your programs: http://www.filehippo.com/

Just let windows 7 disk do it thing and if it don't boot as default then enter into boot option and boot from Disk..
If your unsure about the HDD selection then just unplug your HDD other then the one you want to boot to and again let windows do it's thing.
Install windows updates and go find the latest drivers for your GPU..

Really it is easy these days with an original W7 disks as it was built with ease of use in mind... that's why i can do it...lol
