need some help

Thread Starter
ok so i have an issue at the moment im trying to set up a wireless internet inside of a big house its just 1 floor but i need to go 175 feet from an office where the router will be and threw about 6 walls or so to the kitchen where we would like to use a netbook.

we went from a wirless linkys g router to a netgear wirless n dualband router and when we get to the kitchen the bars drop to about 2 and if we take like 4 steps over to the phone the internet just goes out it shows it has 2 bars but that it cannot connect and that it has no internet connection.

now i got a call today with them telling me even the computers in the office next to the router there programs wont work or anything, the people dont know anything more then basic about computers.

at the moment im going to school for cs and taking networking classes so i need the real life exp.

any help with ideas for making the wireless internet work all the way out in the kitchen would be great or any tips or things i should know i would love. Thanks guys@!!

Sounds like you are having signal loss due to distance injunction with to signal absorption and distortion.

Distance Relative Power Relative Level (dBm)
1m 100 mW +20 dBm
5m 4.0 mW +6 dBm
10m 1.0 mW 0 dBm
25m 0.16 mW -8 dBm
50m 0.04 mW -14 dBm
100m 0.01 mW -20 dBm

With 6 walls in there the chances are high that the Signal strength is even lower. My guess your probably getting -20 dBm at about 75-80 meters. There is only 1 of 3 ways to overcome this.
1. Increase the signal gain with using a Semi-Directional Antenna, which sounds as like you can't change the antenna on your router/AP (Access Point).
2. Add an AP.
or 3. relocate the router to a more central location so it has full house coverage.

I'd probably run a long ethernet cord (<100m) and install another AP in the target area with the same SSID. If your clients aren't that mobile then you have nothing to worry about. If your clients demand connectivity while on the move, make sure the AP's have at least a 10% overlap in range, and preferably use another channel on the secondary AP.

+ rep to both of you thank you for replying.

The client at the moment is basically wanting to use laptops and netbooks as stations in the house 2 in the office where the router is and 1 on a desk in the kitchen also another in the bedroom.

My idea was to relocate the the router to somewhere in the house but the client was a lil upset with that idea because he did not see the idea of upgrading the router from the g to the n dualband because the rep at bestbuy told him he would be able to get 1200 feet easy with just upgrading yet he cant get 175 feet without the connection getting lost so he was a lil upset about spending the money to get that if he is basicly getting the same result as the old one he had. The bestbuy rep told him also about buying an airport card to plug into a wall socket but those run at about $100 also.

Im still a learning a lot about networking so im going to look into more about maybe adding another ap which would basicly be another router? correct me if im wrong. And im pretty sure they would both need to be the same ones.

also still trying to get in contact with him about why he left a message about none of his programs working on his pc, its mostly stock programs and when i left they were working fine i made sure he logged on to all of his stuff before i left. only thing i can think of is some how the internet stoped working in the office but idk why that would happen unless he messed with something.

Also depending on the placement of the router (stand position) it could have a bearing on the distance also...

Read this to help a little further. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk72...807f34d3.shtml
