OCing an Asus Radeon 5850

Thread Starter
I just downloaded MSI Afterburner last night and I tried to unlock the voltage so that I could try and oc the clock a bit using the stock cooling...I have watched a few videos that suggest that you can really do a lot of OCing with this card.....The problem is I cannot even test the waters because the voltage slider is locked....Is there a way to unlock that slider?

Also if not....Is there any suggestions in terms of how high to turn up the clock speeds?

Thanks a lot.

Is your card reference, or non reference?

The ASUS DirectCU 5850 has software voltage control (even though it is non reference), just use the provided ASUS smartdoctor application. Some people have problems getting settings to stick on boot and I personally don't like it.

Which model ASUS 5850 do you have?

I believe you can modify Afterburner to allow voltage control as well (can't seem to find the thread now)

Finally, I believe you could flash your BIOS if you have a reference card.

Have you gone to settings and tried checkmarking the unlock voltage control and monitoring. If that doesn't work to the afterburner file folder and open the MSIAfterburner CFG file. It will look like the following.

Change

to = 1 and save

If that doesn't work you might try and older version of Afterburner. 1.6.1 maybe.

You have the DirectCU, and it should support software voltage control without needing a flash. Use SmartDoctor, or modify Afterburner using the settings above.

Here is another thread talking about afterburner and voltage on the 5850:

One other question...Thanks....Do any of you suggest a specific clock speed for the card?

It really all depends on the temps and the card itself. My 5xxx series all liked to stay below 70C when going above 1ghz with varying voltages. Anything over that temp and I started getting driver crashes.

Your mileage may vary though. You won't know until you try.

I use Smartdoctor for voltage control and Afterburner for core, memory and fan settings. I hit 975/1200 @ 1.299 volts in crossfire. My games crash if I exceed 70 degrees.
