Looking for some opinions/critiques of these logos

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, looking for some outside opinions on somethign I'm currently working on. Two ideas here for a local museum I'm doing some free work for, the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Top designs are early-1900's advertising style inspired w/ woodblock style type. Having an issue now with adding in the words "TROLLEY MUSEUM" without making it look like crap. Running it across the bottom really clashes with the illustration's diagonal empasis

The lower idea is what I'm leaning toward now. The museum also wanted me to maybe look at art deco for inspiration...

Thoughts?

Do you know what they are going to print this on?

I might be worried that the fine lines could be lost in some reproductions. But I like it.

The bottom logo is stronger in some respects, but I don't think deco when I think trolly. I think the text is much stronger in the diagonally emphasized upper logos. The upper logo with MORE track is more successful IMO. Of the deco images, I would choose the left without the interior red bands. I don't think the simplicity hurts it there.

I'm kind of struggling to see where the secondary text will go in those logos too, though. I think you are on the right track in the first where you have the text flush right and on the lower portion of the image. Maybe lose the horizontal lines and introduce a subtle white gradient to separate the text from the track image?

If you experiment with that, I'd also make the secondary text larger in point size.

If you were to abandon the secondary text, the logo in the upper right looks great IMO.

EDIT: numbered the thumbnails

Well those last ideas were shot down. Here's a few new ideas/revisions/variants. Thoughts?
I was leaning towards either 4 or 8 on page one and 17 on page two.

Have you received any directed feedback from the client?

I do agree that you should limit your designs for critique or presentations to just a few strong examples. You give someone too many choices to make and they won't make any of them.

Of the ones you've mentioned, I feel the deco image (10,13,17) is a stronger design (although the H and K in that font are killing me). I really like the border element of 9 and 10, but including a discreet border can make it less dynamic. However I feel the early 1900's design (I like the trolly size of 7 and the font size of 8) is more appropriate of a theme.

Sorry I'm all over the place. I want to critique them all but there are too many!

correct, a quality designer will limit each submission to four unique designs, let your client then choose the elements out each one they like and make four new ones to that spec )great to ask what they didn't like about each one for further ideas), i usually get a great hit the second run, depending on the time frame this step is done by color scheme, first with 1 color then with two color, etc. etc.

Haha, thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, the client was completely open to anything - mostly just wanted something new that possibly incorporated elements of their old logo or which took a historical perspective from the time period when trolleys were at the height of the popularity (arguably 1890-1940). After the first thumbnails I did, they wanted to see more of the early 1900's stuff (its very similar to their current logo) and the art deco ideas. I processed and presented 3 different ideas last time and presented those with 3 slightly altered variants of each.

For this round, the museum board wanted several variants of the 1900's idea and more possibilities for an art deco logo. On that note, they only suggested two typefaces (the "H/K"-problem type was one of them) and a few paintings as well as a bad logo or two that they also liked.

I've sent them the revisions to the 1900 idea but no new Deco ideas yet. I just have way too many and no real direction other than liking the top right (#17). I'll need to draw some new characters for the H and K before sending that out though.

I hope you have a contract written up for the price of each logo or something so your not gett screwed. If a client EVER aproaches me with no clue the worst thing that can be done is provide them with a ton of options.
