According to the Asus website, your mainboard actually supports pretty much all of AMD's latest CPUs, so on a budget, just slot in a 3Ghz Athlon II X4 640 for ~$100 and you'll be right to go.

From reviews I have read, the 640 actually performs pretty good - matching AMD 1090t in pretty much all games.

It also has no problems with a 5870, almost all reviews used a 5870 and if the 640 matched the 1090t for fps, you can be sure the 640 is no more limiting then the 1090t, which is not that limiting at all

You're lucky your mobo supports most recent CPUs, a ~$100 CPU you can slot into your existing rig is much cheaper then building a new rig with a 2500K.

O.o thanks man. That actually helps a lot.

Except that current amd cpus suck tbh. Wait and see how Bulldozer is or go 2500K.
That board won't take Bulldozer.

The vast majority of games don't really care what your cpu is as long as its 2ghz+, but the ones that do you'll wish you had the SB.
Also ATI cards suck, horrible drivers, and frequently perform worse than equal nvidia.

Hey Guys,

I just thought I pop in and say something.

I Got my 5870 towards the end if last year I thought I had endless probs with it

I was my CPU bottlenecking it, I had a Q6600 and even at 3.8Ghz it was only getting about 13000 GPU score in vantage

I upgrade my to my sig rig and off the bat (stock) I was getting 18k

Also when I was running my q6600 I was running 4gigs of kingston 800Mhz RAM and when I oced it me GPU score in vantage would go up

If he needs something to fill the void until then, the cheapest option is a CPU upgrade in his current mobo - and even though I agree that AMD's current CPUs are pnot great, they are still more then capable for gaming - and that $100 CPU I suggested will still perform a crapload better then his x64 5050.

I never said it would, I said he should hold out on a full rebuild to see how Bulldozer performs. When he know, he can then make a choice to go Bulldozer or 2600K - either way, he'll need to build a new rig - and that will cost 10x more then the $100 to upgrade his current CPU in the mean time

Modern games that support multicore CPUs will definitely run better on a modern CPU with more cores.

I had an x64 and was lucky to get 30fps in BC2. I upgraded to my 965be and even with the same video card I was getting over 100fps.

As for wishing I for an SB - not everyone wants to spend double the amount of money just so they can get those extra 15fps-30fps

bahaha, what rock have you been living under? ATi/AMD cards have topped nVidia's cards for years now.

And while the drivers can be frustrating, they still work well enough to let ATi/AMD cards hand nVidia cards their own ass

I am partial to intel myself so I say go i7 2600k or wait for Ivy Bridge if you can. However, I am currently building a folding rig for cheap and for the price you cannot beat AMD's CPUs. I bought a Phenom II x4 965 BE for $135 new. Couple that with a good mobo $150-200ish and you have a very nice rig. You said you'd like Intel though, so your budget is probably pretty big.
