Building midrange gaming rig, looking for opinions - Page 2

Do you plan to overclock you CPU? If so get the X6 and go for gold. Otherwise go for the chip with the higher factory clock. Yes, games only use a couple cores, but the extra cores will come in handy for multitasking, and make it a little more future-proof.

Don't forget after market CPU cooling. I can't stand the sound of the stock fans.

Alright, I'll look into a higher end ATI and bigger power supply. I'm looking at the Radeon HD 6970. They seem to run about $100 more than the 6950s. Is the small performance increase worth another $100? It seems like the value goes down a tad with the newest fastest card.

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO+ASUS EAH6850 214$ AR+10$ gift card
CPU 105$ , why buy a high clocked cpu when u can OC urself ?
CPU Cooler 20$ AR
PSU 80$ (same design as corsair\\seasonic only this one is newer then TX650 and cheaper , 80+ Bronze ceritified and semi modular)
HDD 65$
RAM 40$ AR shipped , 1600Mhz 7-8-8-26

pLuhhmm's setup looks great to me. The cases drive me crazy though- it's so hard to decide. I'm looking at these two mid tower cases.

Do you guys think the handle is a bad idea? It has controls for the fans and such, which is a plus since I'm a light sleeper.

If this is "mid range", why bother with a 970be cpu? Buy a cheaper Athlon II X4 instead and spend the money you save on a better GPU.

The $70 you save could upgrade the GPU from that crappy 6850 to a nice 6950, which you can then unlock to 6970 specs

get a cooler master hyper 212+ or scythe mugen heatsink, and look around for another TIM. AS5 is outdated- there are much better TIM's out there that apply easier and work better. For the PSU, I second everyone else on getting a more powerful one. If you stick with Corsair, you should be fine with 750W (just stay away from their "builder series")

Thanks for the help guys. This is, by far, one of the most helpful forums I've ever found. I'm going with everything pLuhhmm put together (including the 750 watt PSU), with the Cooler Master HAF 922 case. Feel free to suggest any thermal paste you like. It's getting late, and I've got school tomorrow. I'll probably order everything tomorrow.

Edit- I'm assuming that everything except the hard drive and dvd drive comes with all necessary hardware, cables, etc., right? I can purchase the cables and everything at my local pc repair shop though.
