It has ALL been done before. (and, better)

Speaking of thinking for a minute. Maybe you should contemplate why WoW has 12+ million active accounts and makes $1 billion per year. It doesn't do it because it's a boring game, or because people don't like to play it. Oh, and being innovative isn't what makes a good game, being FUN is all the matters, because games are entertainment. That's like someone telling you a hilarious joke, at which you laugh, and then you tell them that it wasn't a good joke because it wasn't innovative.

And just to be clear, I don't play WoW, I just get sick of people hating on a game that pretty much defines a genre, yet somehow they still think it is worthless. You're entitled to your opinion, however that doesn't entitle you to call someone else an idiot for theirs.

It may have alot of accounts and makes oodles of money, but I don't think that it should even rank in the top 25. Its not that I don't like WoW, in fact I absolutely loved the franchise before the developers took it in that direction. I refuse to pay for something that I already pay for in the store. That's like buying a movie and then renting air time from the studio.

I love the Lucas games but you won't find a copy of the upcoming launch because I don't believe that I should have to pay a monthly fee to enjoy the game. If it's a one time fee, fine.

Someone said it's like Crack for gamers. No actually I think those gamers were actually on crack at the time they purchased it knowing full well that they'd have to drop more money down the proverbial Well. And you can clearly see the dangers of Gaming when you search Banned from WoW in YouTube. One kid actually attempted to stuff his remote control up his own tailpipe because his mother cut his account.

Kind of reminded me of the Ralph Fiennes movie "Strange Days" where people become addicted to memories their own loved ones their own or someone they'd never met before who killed or was killed etc. and ended up OD'ing on Jack because they could no longer handle reality.

Games are supposed to be fun. I'm hyper competitive by nature an even I wouldn't go near that franchise with a 10 ft. wireless connection. Blizzard kinda ticked me off by forgetting about where they came from. Especially when they wouldn't support this same feature for SC2 after they GAVE away the resources to some enterprising Gamers who felt that SC2 would be just as cool in an MMO as WoW "is". Bliz dropped the hammer on that quicker than sound.

Your opinion of not liking monthly fees is duly noted. But I've heard it so many times. Now just show me a non-MMO with many hundreds of hours of unique content. Do they let you play with 30 other friends at the same time as well? Maybe those things aren't important to you, but to others they're everything and so it is well worth it to them. A one-time fee is not reasonable for an MMO, unless the MMO is sustainable through advertisements or microtransactions, because MMOs cost a lot of money to run. Unless you're happy with a one-time fee of $200-300.

To me it comes down to how much fun and time do I get out a game for my money? $10-15 a month really isn't a lot when you consider a new game may cost $40-60. Also, a movie-ticket costs between $10-15 and that lasts you all of 2 hours. So really, a subscription fee for a MMO is really not much in the grand scheme of things. But to each their own I guess.

As far people getting too addicted to it, that's not the game's fault, that's the player's fault for having a lack of self-control. What should Blizzard do, make the game less fun?

As far people getting too addicted to it, that's not the game's fault, that's the player's fault for having a lack of self-control. What should Blizzard do, make the game less fun?

I can name several games that you can spend endless amounts of time playing. Shadows of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat, Oblivion, Morrowind true the game really doesn't change but they're still fun and the 1st 3 have such a dedicated following that there are worthwhile Mods to change things up a bit. Such as the "Complete" series of mods.

Don't get me wrong I agree with some of what you're saying but you buy a game, you shouldn't have to keep paying for it til you wise up and drop it. Cause when you stop and think about it, NO it is not that expensive. But then look at the average monthly expense for in home entertainment. $50 for DSL which imho is more of a necessity than entertainment. Cell phone $35-65 depending on the package. Netflix. A single disc subscription is ~$10. Possibly cable, Satellite or Hulu. Most people still have Cable so that's another $40 for basic.

This is ALL before your needs expenses, Transportation Costs if you have a car which includes Insurance. Gas, Power and Rent. If you don't have the Cell phone the landline even without LD, isn't cheap. It's almost $30 by itself. Rent/Mortgage payment? Average is $800 a month depending on your location. More if you live in San Francisco Seattle or New York. This is all I'm saying that to expect a gamer to pay $15 a month to play a game they spent $60 for(when it was new) isn't justifiable. No matter how many hours of pleasure they get from playing it. Most people probably started playing that game when they were kids too. So they aren't paying through the nose for it. Their family is.wink.gif

And that addiction argument only works when it's adults buying the product. when you involve kids and then make little enticements to keep them playing like some BS sword of Godliness and sell the gold for them to be able to purchase it. That makes Blizzard no better than a crack dealer on the corner, imho. Please don't insult my and your intelligence by taking that stance that it's not the developers fault. It IS the developers fault. They built the system and they knew full well that they could keep people on the hook once they got them there. Free will is a female dog in heat, but when you're being enticed and the company doing it is doing everything they can to keep you interested?

Didn't people make a similar argument about Kids and smoking? I didn't take up smoking because of Joe Camel, but I sure didn't believe that to be an issue. Probably wasn't but in this society it's not hard to get kids looking at your product. You take a ride on the Metro, you see all kinds of adult level advertisements. That's not the fault of the Developer. The Developer can only control their product. But c'mon man that's like suggesting that the dealer isn't responsible for selling controlled substances to addicts cause he's just supplying the product to people who willingly purchase. Addicts are addicts. They have an addiction to feed and addictions don't care if you're in your right mind or not. wink.gif

I love gaming. I started gaming before most people even thought they'd have their own PC in their houses. I'd love to have all the money I dropped into cash boxes at the arcade. I could EASILY h2o my system and probably have enough for a nice car too. But there has to be some responsibility shouldered by the developers here.mellowsmiley.gif

Most of the people I know that play WoW, or formerly played, didn't really like the game the majority of the time they played it.

For whatever reason, tons of people are willing to blow money on things they don't particularly like. Not that I am completely innocent in this regard; I've spent literally thousands of dollars on MS products, and I have hated every single one of them.

WoW is worthless to me, and in the end that's all that matters.

I do not doubt Blizzard has a winning formula with WoW, or that millions of people do play and enjoy it, but all that is of very little relevance to me.

Anyway, popularity is never a very good indicator of quality. Afterall, things like cigarettes have a good two orders of magnitude more subscribers than WoW does, and many would consider them to be an even more senseless waste of time and money.
