I am looking in to buying an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe. Looks like it has 10 chokes so 8+2 power phase, and it has a heatsink on the MOSFETs.

Yep blown VRM's...

Having had this happen twice, I'm betting on the mobo. Same thing happened to me on an XFX board I had when using a Phenom 9850, overloaded the mosfets when overclocking. Same thing happened again on an MSI board. The CPU was fine.

I was testing a 4.3 GHz overclock at 1.45 vcore
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but what motherboard were you using? I was testing a 4.3GHz overclock at 1.42 last night on my 965, and I've been told that this motherboard is terrible about getting fried by voltage..

CPUs are very stable, so I don't think that's the problem. Your motherboard probably has problems because of the 4+1 phase design. That's why I'm so careful when buying a 4+1 phase motherboard. I know someone that had the exact same problem.

Wow, necrobump!
I was on an MSI 870-G45 at the time.

Nicolas11x12, if you checked the date on the OP you would see this issue has long passed

Is it just me or is a 4.8GHz overclock with a 580 OCed a bit much for 650 psu??? Wouldn't be surprised if something didn't get enough power.

I doubt I'm approaching the limit of my PSU, the Antec TruePower New PSU's are of good quality. Next time I have to restart I will plug into my kill-a-watt and see how much I'm pulling from the wall on full load. I bet it will be around 400-500w.

EDIT: Update: Wow was I wrong! I plugged in the Kill-a-Watt and it shows 750 watts out of the wall while running Prime in-place large FFTs and Furmark at the same time. Factor in the PSU's 20% inefficiency and that comes out to about 600w. Just under 650w. Luckily it's a great quality unit and hasn't given me any troubles thus far.
